Help for newsreader and email TCP/IP winsock problem please

This is another request for help as my email (Lotus Notes and Agent),
Newsreader (Agent) and Web Browser (MSIE5.05) are continuing not to
function, and I'm having to use a temporary machine to cope with this.
A bit off-topic for UCV, but hope a reader can help a regular!

Hardware is: PIII-600 on an Asus P3BF with 256MB memory and Win98SE.
Access to Internet is either via locally attached Asus Terminal Adapter
or another Asus Terminal Adapter on a Firewall machine. Both routes out
used to work, and currently all other machines on my home network
currently can connect via the Firewall machine except the Asus.

The Asus m/c will now not connect either directly or via the LAN.

The following settings have been compared to a working m/c on my
network, and the Asus, and they are the same:

1. Network neighbourhood (TCP/IP for NIC)
2. Route Print command (same other than IP difference)
3. All files beginning with winsock.* using FC
4. All files beginning with ws2*.dll using FC
5. MSINFO32.EXE output

Applications that work correctly on the Asus:

1. DOS Prompt: ping www.demon.net
2. netinfo Ping, Traceroute etc

Applications that do not work on the Asus:

1. Agent
An online error occurred, Reason WSAEAFNOSUPPORT (Error 10047)

2. mIRC
Unable to create socket

3. Opera
Could not locate remote server
This winsock implementation lacks important functionality

The following actions have not solved the problem:

Restoring a working copy of the registry from 2 weeks ago.
Reinstalling Win98SE from DOS prompt
Removing all network components in safe mode and reinstall.
Running SFC to restore all files
renaming winsock.dll to winsock.dxx and rebooting
Reinstalling MSIE 5.05 and Agent
Uninstalled and reinstalled DUN (DUN 1.3 is not accepted)

has anyone any ideas please.

I'm convinced something is wrong with Winsock, but I've no idea what
else I can do.

Thanks
