Maxtor drives

A few months ago there was a report of Maxtor 40GB drives locking up,
and I do not recall if/how the problem was solved.

We have two of the 5400 40.9GB Maxtors on an ABIT BE-6-II MB UDMA66
connector, and the problem is that when copying 50MB+ chunks of data
through the network, the machine locks up (the keyboard does not operate
and the drives are unavailable through the network). This problem
happens on both master and slave drives.

I believe the Maxtors are the problem as when I had an IBM 37GB drive on
the same cable, I never had the lock-ups.

I'm running Win98SE with NO cylinder limit jumper.

If anyone else has had this problem, and knows the solution to the
lock-ups, I'd much appreciate the tip.

posted to uk.computer.vendors (where problem was reported) and
demon.tech.pc where the sages are.

I'm running a Linux (SuSE 6.3) server with one of those 40Gb Maxtor
drives. We have been copying 3Gb of data to it every night for four
weeks now. There have been no problems at all, not even any transient
ones. The motherboard on that machine uses UDMA33 not 66. If there
really is a problem then it's either OS dependent or it only affects
UDMA66 configurations.

Try asking this question in the NG alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.abit if memory
serves me correctly abit M/Bs can have problems of this nature with Maxtor
HDDs at UDMA 66. Flashing the Bios I believe fixes it.

Yup, a significant portion of the posts on alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.abit
are about problems with Maxtor Drives and the Highpoint UDMA 66 controller.
I don't think there's a definite fix yet though since there still seem to be
fairly regular posts on the subject.

Matt.

Yes, thanks, and I've looked ther and also on the ABIT site; there is a
new RV BIOS out now. It would be interesting to know if DABS and others
have had many "faulty" returns of these drives and motherboards and how
they deal with this issue.
