*** Cross-post alert: please maintain this cross-posting, as I cannot download postings made to claranet.support (or any other claranet.* group) *** For around a week now, I have been unable to download news from Claranet via my dial-up account with them. There is no problem actually connecting, and no problem accessing the mail server - it's just the news server. Most of the time I don't seem to connect to it (news.clara.net) at all (although I did manage to make a posting to claranet.support a couple of days ago, to which I have of course not seen any replies other than one which was kindly e-mailed to me). Sometimes, I do connect, and retrieve a list of posts waiting to be downloaded, which now numbers over 100; and then, after about five minutes, I get: Unexpected NEWS 5xx : 500 connection to server daves.uk.clara.net port 119 failed: timed out waiting for banner from remote server Most of my newsgroups I collect from news.individual.net, but there are some which they don't carry that I can only get from Claranet, and I do feel that this situation has dragged on for long enough. I have made no changes to my settings, so I cannot imagine what the problem is, but I am getting very fed up with it. -- Molly Mockford I think I've been too long on my own, but the little green goblin that lives under the sink says I'm OK - and he's never wrong, so I must be! (My Reply-To address *is* valid, though may not remain so for ever.)

Or are people responding on claranet.support but not maintaining the cross-post to uk.net.providers? I *still* cannot collect any news whatsoever from Claranet! -- Molly Mockford

Crossposted to unp and dist, both on different servers here at this time. In message <0b7prvsa6emohj8s424nf0ocjs0jolokfb@4ax.com>, Anthony R. IIRC, the current version of Turnpike will issue a warning if an attempt is made to cross-post to newsgroups that are associated with different servers. It will then post only one copy to the server associated with the first newsgroup in the newsgroup line. This prevents duplicates with different MIDs, among other hazards. AIIRC, this was the same in TP5.01, but broke down when the first newsgroup wasn't subscribed, and therefore had no associated server. In this case, the current version selects the first newsgroup that does have an associated server. I don't know claranet's policies on crossposted articles, so cannot comment on which way round could result in a true cross-post. I can imagine ways for it to work in one order of newsgroups, but not the other. This will go via news.aaisp.net.uk, but should propagate properly. -- Jim Crowther "It's MY computer" (tm SMG) Avoid more swen by dumping your old Usenet addresses, and put 'spam' or 'delete' somewhere in the Reply-to: header.
