                 THE COMPUTING LABORATORY
                 ========================
             UNIVERSITY OF KENT AT CANTERBURY
             ================================

E.B. Spratt Bursaries in Computer Science
        -----------------------------------------

Functional Programming - Tools and Applications
      -----------------------------------------------

The Computing Laboratory at the University of Kent has available a
number of bursaries for PhD students. Applicants must hold a good
first degree in Computer Science or a closely related subject. The
bursaries cover all fees and provide living expenses at the rate of
4720 pounds per annum. Bursaries are tenable for one year in the first
instance but, subject to satisfactory performance, will be extended for
a further two years.

We are offering Ph.D. studentships in two areas of functional programming.
The first area of interest is the development of tools for the
Haskell programming language. The tools should assist software engineers in
constructing larger-scale functional programs. Among the tools envisaged would
be:
 - a type checking assistant, to assist programmers to resolve and correct
   type-checking errors
 - a symbolic evaluator, capable of exhibiting the behaviour of functional
   programs under test data,
 - a verification system, allowing programmers to prove critical properties
   of their programs.
The work would build on a number of prototype implementations already in
existence and would be based on one of the established Haskell implementations.

The second area is the application of functional programming
in computer graphics and scientific visualization - the use of graphics
to explore and illustrate large data sets. Of particular interest is the
use of laziness in this context. The work could cover topics such as:
 - the development of new algorithms, or lazy variants of existing
   algorithms
 - design and implementation and evaluation of a functional model
   for visualization
 - language and implementation issues related to visualization
 - formal verification of implementations

Suitable candidates should have a strong background in computing with
some knowledge of functional programming and (for the second area)
computer graphics. Successful candidates will be working within
the world renowned Theoretical Computer Science group headed by
Prof. David Turner.

                GENERAL INFORMATION
                ===================

The Computing Laboratory has an international reputation for computing
research. There are approximately forty people on the research staff,
with a similar number providing support and computing services.

Students are normally expected to present their work-in-progress to a
wider audience a number of times during their studies, and are
encouraged to attend appropriate conferences and seminars. Bursary
holders will normally be expected to assist with the Laboratory's
undergraduate teaching programme.

Research students have full access to the computing facilities of the
laboratory. In addition, each postgraduate office is equipped with
personal computers and X-terminals allowing direct access to central
computing.

The laboratory's main areas of research are:

        + Networks and Distributed Systems
        + Parallel Processing
+ Software Tools and Electronic Publishing
+ Functional Programming and Theoretical Computer Science
+ Database Technology and Object Management
+ Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems
+ Numerical Computation, Simulation and Visualization
