                 THE COMPUTING LABORATORY
                 ========================
             UNIVERSITY OF KENT AT CANTERBURY
             ================================

        E.B. Spratt Bursaries in Computer Science
        -----------------------------------------

         Formal Modelling of Distributed Systems
         ---------------------------------------

The Computing Laboratory at the University of Kent has available a
number of bursaries for PhD students. Applicants must hold a good
first degree in Computer Science or a closely related subject. The
bursaries cover all fees and provide living expenses at the rate of
4720 pounds per annum. Bursaries are tenable for one year in the first
instance but, subject to satisfactory performance, will be extended for
a further two years.

We are offering Ph.D. studentships in the general area of formal modelling of
distributed systems. Specifically, the studentship is intended to investigate
the use of formal description techniques, such as LOTOS, Z and Raise, within
the area of Open Distributed Processing. Such techniques are playing an
increasingly important role within Open Distributed Processing. We expect
the studentships to follow one of our two main research initiatives
within the general Open Distributed Processing environment. The first
involves the development of a technique suitable for the specification and
validation of distributed multimedia systems, while the second
involves the development of a formal theory of consistency between
specifications.

A suitable applicant would possess either a strong grounding in distributed
systems or a strong mathematics and computing background.
This is a very new research area which offers the potential
for stimulating and challenging original
research, within the bounds of two world renowned research groups:
the Networks and Distributed Systems group headed by Professor Peter Linington
and the Theoretical Computer Science group headed by Professor David Turner.

                GENERAL INFORMATION
                ===================

The Computing Laboratory has an international reputation for computing
research. There are approximately forty people on the research staff,
with a similar number providing support and computing services.

Students are normally expected to present their work-in-progress to a
wider audience a number of times during their studies, and are
encouraged to attend appropriate conferences and seminars. Bursary
holders will normally be expected to assist with the Laboratory's
undergraduate teaching programme.

Research students have full access to the computing facilities of the
laboratory. In addition, each postgraduate office is equipped with
personal computers and X-terminals allowing direct access to central
computing.

The laboratory's main areas of research are:

        + Networks and Distributed Systems
        + Parallel Processing
        + Software Tools and Electronic Publishing
        + Functional Programming and Theoretical Computer Science
        + Database Technology and Object Management
        + Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems
        + Numerical Computation, Simulation and Visualization
