I have dealt with chickens at my grandmothers since I was young. I spent many of hours catching chickens for something to do. (Being a hyperactive child has its drawbacks. :) Chickens don't fly very well because their bones are more solid than other birds. (There are many other reasons as well, there is no need to list them.) This means that flying does not come as naturally to them, especially since they can run fairly fast. But they do fly away from dogs, when running doesn't work. The problem is that they don't fly very fast or far, so if there is no where for them to fly to, they end up being chased on the ground again. The only difference is that they are more tired. Chickens are not that bad with weather either. In a light rain, they ignore it and keep going. In heavy rain, they go for shelter. Is everything from your part of the country so dumb that it doesn't come in out of a hail storm. Maybe it is in the water. >>Believe it or not, animals *do* suffer; they are not inanimate machinery. >A good way to insure the future suffering of Perdue chickens is to >release them to "freely range," I assure you. Then there is always the method of cutting off their heads and letting them run around spurting blood. This is always good. Then hang them on the closeline to drain some. (Actually my grandmother hasn't done this in quite a while. Makes for tough meat. This is true.) >PS- I'm a vegitarian. I like the taste of meat and I feel that there is nothing wrong with eating meat. I will admit that I like my steak well done though. I feel sorry for anyone that limits what they are allowed to eat in life. The world has so many different tastes and I want to try them all. Then I'll go back and concentrate on the ones I liked. -Randy P.S.: I can't believe that I am discussing the intelligence and taste of chickens. :) ------ _ __ ' ) ) / /--' __. ____ __/ __ , / \_(_/|_/ / <_(_/_/ (_/_ Randy McCaskill / rmccask@seas.gwu.edu '
