I do not expect to be equal in power to everyone else; e.g. the president
of Motorola is much more powerful than I am. What I do expect is to have an
equal *opportunity* at achieving those things that I deem important (which
may or may not include power), and I also expect to be treated equally
before the law. I *especially* expect to be treated equally without regard
to my gender, race, or religion (or lack thereof). The recent SC ruling
tossed the notion of equality out the window; thus, I find it very
upsetting. Using the logic of that ruling (and behind the "all men are
bastards" calendar) any number of freedoms can be denied to an individual
simply because he is a member of the "wrong" group. It is this same mindset
which is behind the Ontario NDP's quota legislation and is just another
example of the double standard which has taken the notion of equality and
twisted it to mean something very different and very bad. One does not
make a right by legislating a wrong.
