In article <uha4usgnq11812@corp.supernews.com>, "istartedi" <comments@vrml3d.com> spake unto the electronic multitude, saying : > As you > mill about, you will have no trouble telling the > nerds from the geeks. Introduce yourself to the > geeks, and the rest will sort itself out. As one who fails to qualify as either (but has friends in both the other people-sheds you assign them to), I note that you seem to be implying something to the effect that geeks are like friendly Westerners, while nerds mor resemble stand-offish Easterners. That could be true -- or the opposite of experience -- for one who resembles one camp more than the other (supposing there are visible differences). I wonder, though, if there is any consistent pattern in attitudes toward the uninitiated -- and if it varies according to the perceived intelligence of the aforesaid uninitiated. Suppose, for instance, I were to arrange with three or four other old farts to go to such a meeting -- a retired professor of ancient history, a retired financier, a politician, a fiction writer, and a curator from an art museum, for instance, or some similarly variegated group. (We might all have been classmates somewhere, forty or fifty years back.) Would we be able to tell one group from the other, and agree which was which? -- RR 'Beartooth' Neuswanger <karhunhammas (at) lserv.com> double retiree & linux greenhorn running Pan 0.11.2 under RH 7.2 Keep in mind that I have no idea what I am talking about.
