You need to be sure that your kernel supports PPPoE (recompile to be sure),
and make sure you have a recent version of `pppd`, and you have to adjust
your /etc/ppp/options file to accept IPCP remote, meaning that your machine
will believe itself to have whatever IP address the other end of PPP tell it
it has. 

Verizon doesn't offer Static IP addresses, so far as I know, you might also
have to run `dhcpd` so that it will pick up on whatever IP addresses the
Verizon DHCP server is offering.
