I grew up in the same Washington area that the original poster wrote about. I always had fights with my mother about staying up late on Oscars night, Emmys night, Miss America night, etc., because these always started at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time, so that they could start after the West Coast people were home from work. I was so jealous of those kids in the more Western time zones who could watch these shows because they started (and, of course, ended) earlier. I've never had kids of my own, but I've wondered if the widespread availability of VCRs has helped in alleviating fights between kids who want to watch shows broadcast past their normal bedtimes and their parents. Or is there still a perceived advantage in watching a show live, especially if it looks like a lot of the other kids may be talking about it at school the next day.
