100% agreement. How about if we -admit- that what we really need here is
some software that works more like a distributed database than
a bunch of bins of old newspapers that get thrown into the garbage
every few days (the news expiration date).

For example, just the way that this "unix news software" we use
is configured for distribution is totally crazy.
Instead of a downstream site telling an upstream site what information
it wants, we have to configure BOTH SIDES of each and every connection.

If the upstream site sends too much, it is a waste and goes to "junk,"
and human intervention and the hand-editing of text files is required
every time a downstream site (e.g. MITECH) wants to change what groups
it gets from the upstream site (e.g. UUNET).

Supposedly some people @world.std.com are working on better news
software under some kind of contract with UUNET.
