need help with LPS20 ansi selection stuff

Hi there, folks.

I am the proud owner (well, ok, MANAGER) of a nifty turbo LPS20 printer.
(damned nice, that..).

Anyway, the printer is very good at doing what you tell it--
i.e., I have been able to crank out real nice POSTSCRIPT documents,
as well as other stuff.

My first need, however, is quite simple....

I have several large *ASCII* text files that I want to print, but
I would like to use a somewhat smaller FONT than the "default"
font used for ANSI-type files.

Is there some simple (equivalent) way to set this up for a LPS20?

I've previously had a lot of experience setting up HP printers
with system device control libraries (I had to consult my HP
technical book, manually edit in some font types, etc). However,
I am unfamiliar with what "text size" (etc) escape sequences
to use for the ANSI mode in the LPS20.

Has some kind soul out there done some work on this?

170 column landscape control chars ...

<esc>[?27 J<ESC>[4w<ESC>[15m<ESC>[?7l<ESC>[1;180s

270 column landscape control chars
<ESC>[27 J<ESC>[4w<ESC>[15m<ESC>[?7l<ESC>[1;270s

don't claim to understand the above. They were given to me like that
and I just added them to a device control library. The 270 one only
seems to work on LEDGER size paper.

let me know if there are any other ways to do this, or pick a font!
something similar to enscript on ultrix would be great!
if not then more control characters to put in the library would help a
lot

supposedly these are document in some printserver manual, but I have not

found them yet.

The FM to R is DEC AA-JP25B-TK, "PostScript Translators Reference Manual"
At least that's the version I have.

It's not one of DEC's best, IMHO, but is a little better than guesswork.
The translator seems to (?) run in the host computer. It converts the
"other" formats into PostScript. It should take about the same escape
sequences as a normal DECwriter -- except sometimes you don't get the same
results. For example, on an LA120, etc. changeing the horizontal pitch to
16.5 automatically gives you a smaller font. On the Printserver it doesn't.

Here's my guess at decoding...

<esc>[?27 J -- PFS page format select landscape extended B private
<ESC>[4w -- DECSHORP set horizontal pitch to 16.5 cpi
<ESC>[15m -- SGR select graphic rendition (use Courier 6.7 point font)
<ESC>[?7l -- DECAWM set mode auto wrap off
<ESC>[1;180s -- DECSLRM set left margin to 1, right to 180

> 270 column landscape control chars

<ESC>[27 J -- PFS page format select (undocumented, should it be "?27"?)
<ESC>[4w -- DECSHORP set horizontal pitch to 16.5 cpi
<ESC>[15m -- SGR select graphic rendition (use Courier 6.7 point font)
<ESC>[?7l -- DECAWM set mode auto wrap off
<ESC>[1;270s -- DECSLRM set left margin to 1, right to 270

arguments for PFS:
I will give the even numbers for portrait orientation, add 1 for landscape.
"Normal" gives an ANSI standard 1/2 inch left and top margin and 5/6 bottom.
"Ext" or Extended gives a minimum top and bottom margin.
"private" adds a minimum left margin.
0 (same as ?20) default.
2 normal A4
4 normal North American letter
6 Extended A4
8 Extended legal
?20 Ext North American private
?22 Ext A4 private
?24 Ext legal private
?26 Ext B private

For fudging character sizes, the GSM and GSS sequences look interesting.
(I haven't tried them, mind.)

GSM (Graphic Size Modification) sets the height and width:
    <esc>[Pn1;Pn2 B -- the space IS significant
Pn1 is a decimal number for percent of GSS height
Pn2 is a decimal number for percent of GSS width

so it seems that <esc>[200;50 B will give a character twice as high and
half as wide as the GSS setting.

GSS (Graphic Size Selection) sets the height. (width is implicit)
<esc>[Pn C -- the space is part of the syntax
Pn is a decimal number for percent of "font height set by SSU
             sequence" (whatever that is.)

Good luck.
