For years I have resisted buying cable or satellite.  I like good TV, but
the charge ... basic service for what, $40 per month... (that's $480 per
year cash AFTER I pay taxes and social security on the income... something
like *$800 per year* as the check stub shows it).  I like good TV, but what
I see on cable is not good TV (except maybe for C-span and The Weather
Channel and maybe CNN).

Public TV - PBS - used to have great programming - I sense they're being
squeezed in the current recession, because I see more cheaply made
commercially produced stuff.  This cheap stuff was what I saw when I watched
cable Discovery et. al., and one reason I thought cable wasn't worth paying
for.  Lots of titillating 'shocking' footage, nothing in the script for
people with a college education or a thoughtful outlook.

I would enjoy some of the old sitcoms like 'Beverly Hillbillies' et al, but
when over 1/3 of the time is commercials and important parts of the program
have been cut leaving you saying 'huh, what's going on, I don't recognize
this show', it isn't worth it.

It especially isn't worth it because I can't stand, really can't stand the
ceaseless barrage about how I'm not a real man unless I go out NOW! and buy
a Dodgy truck or Cadillac Landslide, or Pepsi or Brand 'X' pimple cream,
etc.  I just can't take it.  If I can't have a decent, thoughtful,
commercial-free show like NewsHour or Nova, FrontLine or Now, I'd rather be
reading a book or magazine or a website written by & for thoughtful people.
