S.1567: A Bill to Kill Telecom Censorship (Pass It On!)

On February 9th, Senators Patrick J. Leahy (D) of Vermont and Russell D.
Feingold (D) of Wisconsin co-sponsored Senate Bill 1567, which would
repeal the "indecency" provisions of the Telecom Bill.

If you want those provisions repealed, here's what to do:

   - Send a one-page letter or fax to both of your Senators. If one of
your Senators is Patrick Leahy or Russell Feingold, congratulate
him on his fine work. For all other Senators, urge them to support
     S. 1567 and help to pass it as swiftly as possible. Get right to
the point, limit yourself to a couple of paragraphs, and be very
respectful as you ask these Senators to change existing law.

You can find addresses, fax numbers and instructions at several
     Websites -- http://ast1.spa.umn.edu/juan/congress.html and
     http://voter96.cqalert.com/cq_job.htm are especially helpful.

Phone calls are not as effective as letters and faxes. If you're
going to phone, do so only after sending a letter or fax -- and
be sure to mention S. 1567 by number. Email only after writing
and calling, and be sure to include your U.S. mailing address.

   - Also write to members of the Commerce Committee, because that's
where the bill is now, and those members will decide its future:

   - Pass this information on to everyone in the United States. Copy
it, paste it. repost it, email it -- only 5 Senators voted against
the Telecom Bill as a whole, so finding the votes to repeal this
part of it will not be easy. We'll need as many letters and faxes
as possible to all 100 Senators, and the letters that count most
come from the voting public in each Senator's state.

   - Pressure the news media to follow this issue and this bill (S.
1567). Write to and phone major newspapers, C-SPAN, the networks
and local stations. It will be very difficult to get them to cover
     anything but the ongoing campaigns.

   - Follow S. 1567 at THOMAS: http://thomas.loc.gov/d104/d104query.html
As the bill moves toward a vote, be ready to make a final push.

The text of the bill is attached below.
