Taylorchuk's problem is that he/she/it lives and dies usenet unaware that
there is another internet phenomena called the world wide web.

On the "web" as those in the know call it you can search for information.
For instance, if you type "how to sue for libel in Canada" in one of the
better "search engines" ( http://www.google.ca ) it returns many references
to that topic. The first reference in this case would be
http://www.cyberlibel.com/libel.html a "FAQ" about libel.

While we don't have to prove damages in a libel suit I doubt this the case
here. Some people's lives seem to be enhanced by getting flamed on the 'net.
It provides them with a sort of pseudo-fame and allows them a cheap
self-esteem hit from feeling morally superior to the flamer. It also takes
the focus away from an otherwise barren, squalid non-life.

Having watched many a flame war over the years I can say that neither party
ends up looking anywhere near intelligent.

The thing that kills me is the usenet lawyering that goes on as they try to
turn the others words against them. This is one of the first signals that
tells us we're about to make ourselves look stupid. When we're replying
about some detail in the other person's reply-to-a-reply-to-a-reply.....
rather than the subject that started the exchange it's time to switch
topics.

Terminal phases of flame wars can be recognised by an almost complete
absence of the original topic and references to breeding and/or genetics
generally with regard to the target's morals or intelligence. Sexually
explicit references about the other person's family and their upbringing can
also be seen.

It has long been held (http://www.godwinslaw.com/ ) that any mention of
hitler or nazis is the end of a thread and whoever mentioned either has lost
the argument.

If you don't want to get flamed here's some free advice from a quote I don't
have time to attribute; "It's often better to keep one's mouth shut and be
thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."
