Apple G4 and DVD-RW ?

Hello all, first of all sorry for the corssposting madness, but I have no
clue where to go exactly.

I have a Power Mac G4 swith the Apple "SuperDrive".
In fact this drive is a Pioneer DVR-103.
Apple system profiler says it is a DVD-R\CD-RW drive, but the product
specifications of Pioneer says it's also DVD-RW.
When I try to insert a DVD-RW disc, MacOS says that the disc needs to be
formatted and when I hit OK it says that the disc is protected.

Any help here? Anybody here that has experience with the DVR-103 on a G4 and
it's DVD-RW capabilities?

have you tried a general purpose DVD-R in that drive? I got the pioneer A03
drive (the same, i think) and it always asks to "format" the disk when i put
it in (a blank cd or dvd). Just ignore that and start burning, maybe? or
can you not ignore it? i'm new to this thing too - just got the drive this
last weekend.

There no need to do format a DVD-RW. Just a quick erase is enough. A full
erase is needed when it's going to be played back on standalone DVD players
though. Oh, by the way, I don't have a Mac and it's weird that there's no
mention of DVD-RW on the Apple site, only DVD-R. I don't understand. Is the
firmware crippled anyhow?

I have the answer. iDVD chose not to recognize DVD-RW. Just render the
content into the hard drive and use Toast instead to burn it into DVD-RW.

Might be worth trying with Toast Titanium.

Which version of toast is required for that kind of operation ? Can you
explain how to do it, is it the same procedure as when burning a cd-r ?

I read somewhere that it should be possible to make a miniDVD, that is
to burn DVD content on a normal cd-r with toast. Do you by chance now
how to do that ? (I am aware that only few minutes of video can be on
such a disc :-)

Best wishes

Where did you read this?
Just checking: WOuld that mean that it's possible to put like 10 minutes of
MPEG 2 video on a CD-R and use a standalone DVD-Player to playback this
'miniDVD' ?

Ok, I've figured it out.
Apple system profiler says: Pioneer DVD-R device. Though the extra
specifications tab mentions "DVD-RW DVR-103".
The device is DVD-RW, it is just the MacOS that does not support the RW
functionality.
Just disable all extensions that belong to "Authoring Support", except for
the "CD/DVD Driver"
Then use Roxio Toast Titanium 5.1 to burn the DVD-RW! That is all it works
perfect. Just read Toast instructions for the DVD specific stuff.
I have iDVD 1 and DVD Studio Pro. iDVD Does not seem to be able to create a
project and then save it to disk, so that you can use Toast to actually burn
the DVD project on DVD(-RW), but DVD Studio Pro does.

So:
-No firmware update is needed for the DVR-103
-Disable the Apple system extension for CD/DVD authoring except for the
CD/DVD Driver (so disable Firewire, USB, etc. support)
-Use DVD Studio Pro to master your DVD project.
-Use Roxio Toast Titanium 5.1 to burn the project on DVD-RW

Last note: There's DVD-RW and DVD+RW.
DVD-RW is the standard created by Pioneer, and DVD+RW is the one created by
Phillips.
A Phillips DVD+RW disc does not work on the Pioneer DVD-RW Found in the G4!
And not all standalone players or DVD-ROM drives in computers can placyback
all these formats. Be careful, test it before buying!

I've done miniDVD/cDVD (same thing) on the PC, but I do not
believe you can do it with Toast.

p.s. Relatively few DVD players support miniDVD playback, although
some (most notably asian companies) are starting to. Stop by

I did do some testings with various DVD standalone players
Here is what I have found so far about stand alone DVD players that are able
to playback DVD-RW CD's

More testing info? Send me a mail

Hi, and thanks for the quick answer :-). Which kind of software did you
use on the pc ? I know this is a bit offtopic but do you know any
userfriendly DVD authoring software for the pc ?

Do you know if it is possible to author a DVD on a pc, and then
afterwards burn it onto a DVD using the mac DVD burner ?

Best wishes

I used Ulead's Video Studio with the DVD plugin.

I'm pretty sure (I'll need to check) that their new $45-$50 DVD Movie
Factory can make miniDVDs. It's a great program. I don't work for them.
Plug. Plug. Plug.

OK. Checked. Yes it does:

(copying & pasting from their web page)

miniDVD - 'mini Digital Versatile Disc'
miniDVD is DVD-Video recorded on a CD-R or CD-RW disc. Typically, a
miniDVD can hold about 18 minutes of video encoded at 4 Mbps.

miniDVD Video Parameters Settings *

* Frame Size: 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL)
*  Frame Rate: 29.97frames/second (NTSC) or 25 frames/second (PAL)
* Video Data Rate: 4~8 Mbps CBR or VBR (Constant/Variable Bit Rate)
* Audio Settings: Stereo, 48 kHz and 192~384 kbps MPEG audio

miniDVD Playback Options:

* A very limited number of stand-alone DVD Players with CD-R or CD-RW
playback capabilities (See DVD player manufacturer for compatibility)
* Computer DVD/CD-ROM drives with playback software

NOTE: These settings are the same as the DVD settings.

This is excellent!! Good for home movies - exit endless sessions of
birthdays and holidays, enter a few minutes on a miniDVD! :-)

Seriously - can this be done on a Macintosh? You mentioned that Toast
couldn't do it, but are there any other SW that will?
How many minutes will a miniDVD hold?

One thing to consider is that some of the new
slot loading CD players that have no tray, can't
use mini CDs. I don't know of any slot loading
DVDs yet, but they will probably be coming soon.

MiniDVDs use the standard size CD-R(W), not the mini-CDs.

The DVDs on the Titanium PowerBooks are slot-loaders, and are (at least)
DVD-ROM drives.

I have had a lot of experience in writing Mini dvd's on the PC, ALso vcd and
SVCD.

Yes its true only a handful of dvd standalone players play SVCDs and Mini
DVDs.

SVCDs is just a compat issue.

Mini DVDs, Quite easy to explain, DVD or DVD-Video are a standard for which
video is encoded to a disk in a specific format like ISO 9660, DVD Video
uses a content/video format called M-Udf Bridge.
When you make a mini dvd it does not burn it as an M-Udf file just content.
99 percent of dvd players look for Video First (Video Content) and so the
player recognises it as a dvd.
Content first is rarely read first so most arnt recognised at all.

Almost all dvd rom drives recognise dvd-content or dvd-video so you will see
most work on pcs or mac.

To make mini dvds (DVD-content first) on the pc, You can author in most dvd
packages and save the whole complete dvd as Video_TS folder on your hard
disk and burn to cd as is.
Or create a image which can be burnt using a dvd writer.
Some cd writers can write udf images and thus create video first but there
is only one i know of.

SVCDs Are made quite easily on the pc using nero 5.5 or videopak 5.
Simply import your footage and edit in your favorite package, Output to full
resolution and import into your mpeg encoder.
On the PC the choice for me was TMPenc which could encode varible Bit rates
and give me some absolutle stunning results.

I have 2 solutions to edit and author dvds on.
PC has a matrox G400 marvel svideo in and sb live 128.
Editing on adobe premier 5.5 and after fx and boris, Hollywood Fx bronze.
Output to card as svideo to Formac DV Bridge plugged into either G4
Superdrive or New Imac.

These are edited if needed on final cut pro 2.
Then authored at the moment in idvd2 but soon DVD STudio Pro.
(NE One know where I Can get it cheap?)

Hope this helps everyone and clears the mini dvd thing up...

Mike
