Acrobat 9 Pro for Mac fails to complete scanning second side

On p.64 of Acrobat 9 Pro Instructions, Scanning a Paper Document to PDF, it states; "Note: You can scan both sides of pages even on scanners that do not themselves support two-sided scanning. When Both Sides is selected, a dialog box appears after the first sides are scanned. You can then reverse the original paper documents in the tray, and select the Scan Reverse Side (Put Reverse Of Sheets) option in that dialog box. This method produces a PDF with all pages in the proper sequence."
Using the Macintosh 10.X version of the software on either a Tiger (OS 10.4) or Leopard (OS 10.5) Mac computer with a Hewlett Packard Office Jet Pro 7590 scanner with Auto Document Feed (Scan-Pro software) and initiating the scan using the Acrobat 9 Pro software, the first side scans successfully, but when the pop-up window asking to have the second side scanned is completed and "Accept" is clicked in the resulting scan window, the scan of the second side is immediately terminated and the first side pages "finished". Acrobat 9 Pro uses HP's Twain driver for this.
In post #9 on the Adobe User's Forum: <http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c0627fd>, Tim Whitfield had the exact same problem which he solved only by using the Windows version of the Acrobat software. G. Wright also had this problem: G. Wright, "Acrobat 9 Pro Mac os x 4.11 Application Quit... Creating Multi-page pdf from scanner" #, 28 Jun 2008 9:58 am </webx?14@@.59b5aa09>
Apparently the Windows version works, but the Macintosh version doesn't. Acrobat 9 help in Bombay after 4 calls has been a nightmare so far, in complete denial.

Go to Menu in which your set up and use printer in Acrobat. Now click on the listing for you printer and the should be window to pop up. One of the setting has to do whether you want two sided on front side only. Make sure set to both sides. Then quit. Now when you finish a scan it should ask for next page of scan completed. When you click on scan completed that kills any chance at printing other side the scan is complete for all intents and purpose. Click instead next page or next.

Read my post above again. This is exactly what I did. I used Acrobat 9 Pro to start the scan from Create PDF\From Scanner\Scan Both Sides. The first window showed Acrobat using the HP Twain driver, and the final window showed the scan going to Acrobat 9 Pro.

After the scan of the first side was complete, a window came up offering the option to scan the second side beginning with the reverse of the last page scanned from the first side. I selected this option and the final window again showed the scan of the second side going to Acrobat 9 Pro. When "Accept" was clicked, this scan was instantly terminated and the "finish" of the first side occurred. After this was completed, the scan session ended.

Tim Whitfield posted to this forum over a year ago discussing exactly the same problem. With a Windows version of the same Acrobat software available to him, he used exactly the same scanner to scan both sides without a problem.

There is obviously a software issue with the Macintosh version. I spent an hour each on 3 calls with Adobe help in Bombay going over the same ground and getting nowhere. Their promise of a return call after "research" failed to occur, and calling them again to see what happened was even more frustrating. I advise against using the phone option for help, but in my case I could not obtain the software serial number from their splash screen as instructed(it disappeared abruptly without divulging the number) and neither of the two different numbers on the case and on the CD worked. Without the serial # I couldn't access the online help.

Since my further online research has revealed that this has been an ongoing problem for more than a year, I have little hope of resolution from Adobe. This and other similar posts is a last-ditch effort to find someone who has obtained/devised a fix for the problem.

Is there a newer driver for the scanner. Maybe you have to use a program to specifically run the scanner. If was on my other computer I could recommend the software because I have it installed. (although It doesn't have Driver for my scanner a Umax and it doesn't do me any good.) If I can do a Google search I migh come up with an name.

I have the newest driver on the scanner and have contacted HP regarding my problem. Their only suggestion was a possible scanner memory problem and they gave me the procedure for cleaning all the memory locations back to new-in-box condition. I did that and it did not correct the problem with the Acrobat 9 Pro for Mac software failing to scan both sides.

Again, with the Windows version of the Acrobat 9 Pro software properly scanning both sides using the same scanner that the software for the Macintosh won't do that on, it's obviously a problem with the Acrobat software, and not a simple one at that.

Try:

VueScan

They will allow you to download and run as a 30 day trial.

Hi, I'm having exactly the same problem as described above and in this post <http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5b4dd> (i'm using as well the samsung scx that Eric has)
I have an additional information that might be useful: it IS possible to scan multiple pages when using the feeding function from the scanner's ADF. But as Dick mentioned above, if one job is finished, the program has to be restarted to find the scanner again. And it loses all preferences.
So the bug must be somehow before that pop-up comes up asking you to keep on scanning or to finish.
Unfortunately the Samsung scanner I have is not supported by SANE. But I installed SANE anyway (it didn't work) but the interesting thing is that after my Samsung disappeared from the list the SANE was still there.
I had exactly the same window like on this screenshot that I found in the other post <http://i37.tinypic.com/332oz76.gif>
but at the "Please select a device" menu the SANE driver appeared. So I would have been able to scan the second side using a different driver.
My question for a possible workaround: Does anybody know how to install the same driver twice, Samsung 1 and Samsung 2 for example?
Then I might be able to scan first using the Samsung 1 and the second set with the Samsung 2 driver ...

Thanks for any help on the matter.

-John

PS: I also tried the VueScan program but I could not get it to work very well as no matter what setting the scan is always very slow, even in the B/W settings or line art. It seems to be always scanning full color and then converting. As I'm scanning a lot of B/W text that's rather annoying.
