Update installation wants "Program Manager" closed

I am trying to update Adobe Reader, from Update within the programs
Help menu.
It fails to install asking me to close "Program Manager", but I don't
have such an application open!
I have closed all running programs and it still requests the same when
I 'retry'.
It leaves only the resident programs and none of those are called
"Program Manager" either, at least in Task Manager!

Can anyone suggest what the installer might be wanting?

Thanks

Nigel

i have found that if you manually update acrobat reader 9.2 via the
help-update menu selection it will download the file to update it to 9.3
and then ask you to close acrobat reader itself before it will install.
don't close the installer, just close acrobat reader. i think that
is the same issue that you are having.

Thanks Chris,
Unfortunately that isn't the case here.
I am closing Adobe Reader when it is installing and I also close other
programs incase they are the cause.

I have tried uninstalling Adobe Reader from Control Panel, but that
runs into the same problem i.e., that it wants me to close something
called "Program Manager"!

uninstall adobe reader and install the popular and free foxit pdf
reader. adobe doesn't care about its customers and offers no worthwhile
support. even the paid support disapoints. good luck.
