I have to generate an Index from a manual in Russian in FM8. I put the correct order in the references pages (as I do for other languages, Greek for example) but when I generate and update the index the order isn't right, it follows some strain order... Does anyelse tried it? This manual uses Helvetica Cyr Upright font. In the reference pages I put this order: Symbols[\ ];Numerics[0];А; Б; В; Г; Д; Е; Ж; З; И; Й; К; Л; М; Н; О; П; Р; С; Т; У; Ф; Х; Ц; Ч; Ш; Щ; Ъ; Ы; Ь; Э; Ю; Я <$numerics><Аа Бб Вв Гг Дд Ее Жж Зз Ии Йй Кк Лл Мм Нн Оо Пп Рр Сс Тт Уу Фф Хх Цц Чч Шш Щщ Ъъ Ыы Ьь Ээ Юю Яя>

I also found that FM7 works correctly and the index generated in it is in order... Also a russian letter (the one that seems a "R" reversed) does not works in FM8, but it works in FM7.

I would suggest that its FrameMaker 8s support for Unicode that messes things up. Version 7 and previous required you to use a specific Cyrillic font: for example, Я occupied the position of (German double-s) in the Windows western character set. FrameMaker 8 expects Я to be in the Unicode range allocated to it. But why you cant define any sort order you like on the reference pages is not clear. Is there any possibility that the order on the reference page uses the Unicode characters? What font have you used on the reference page?

Thanks David. I also suppose that was something near the Unicode... To define the order I used the same font as for the index: Helvetica Cyr upright.

Carlo, which specific version of FM8 are you using, from the Help > About page, the "pxxx" numbers.

This is a very long shot, but just to double-check: was the index file originally created in FM 7.x or earlier, or was it an FM8 document from the very beginning? Same question for the chapters?

All the manual was in FM7, converted in mif and translated with Trados in Russian. The new mif files from Trados were opened in FM8. The Index and TOC file were not translated, just saved as FM8 and updated from the book. I intended to upgrade to FM8 to use the Russian dictionary.

Ah, I bet that is the problem, starting in FM7 and then moving to FM 8, maybe the index markers (or the index itself) didn't get updated correctly because of the change in unicode capabilities between the two versions. I vaguely remember somebody mentioning that index markers don't "convert" to unicode when you change versions, they have to be entered in unicode to start with. Maybe somebody else here knows this issue <looking around hopefully> My next suggestion would be to do a new small test file in FM8, put in a couple of index entries that would clearly show whether the sort order was working, create a brand new book and add an index file, and see if the result does actually work when it's an "all-FM8" workflow.
