We are running into serious font and formatting issues; essentially any
font or formatting I do on the PC is lost when the material is processed
wiht inDesign. If I switch from Word over to inCopy, will the formatting
cross over?
I think these are two different issues:
1. InDesign-Word workflow
2. Font issues
Font issues have been discussed above. I also recomend to use only OTF for all apps. And yes, programs and workflow which we use will determine technology. Tables to translate letters from on Computerlanguage to the other are not necessary if you use OTF. I don't think that Adobe will invest in old technology, OTF is the future.
But in an InDesign-Word-Workflow you will alway loose formating because Word does not support all format possibilites InDesign has and supports also methods and graphics which are not allowed in high end prepress. Word is good to create and write text on the first place in a workflow, but when it is placed to InDesign - or opened in INCopy - you should never convert it back or export it to Word. You should keep it between InDesign and InCopy. Because InCopy is technically identical - in some aspects - as InDesign you will never loose any formating done in InDesign. So I can only recomend to use InCopy instead of Word inside of your workflow.
