Ok while I realise Abobe are Postscript I am having trouble getting some large-ish postscript files to Distill in Acrobat/Rasterize in Photoshop/or open in Illustartor. Have also tried uploading to Distill Online and timed out. They are produced by a package CadScript and they assure me it is standard and reasonably simple postscript it generates. The thing that gets me is I can output the files directly to our HP5000ps and open them in Ghostscript, also our film outputters don't have any problem with them - so this leads me to think the postscript would be OK. But there is something going wrong somewhere. It is usually only one or two files in the set of 10 seperations of a map that doesn't work, and most maps run without any problem. The PS files are 10 seperations for a map produced by a Package CadScript (a postscript soloution for MicroStation). These are then opened (rasterized at 300dpi greyscale) in Photoshop and saved as a tif. The Tifs are then used as masks for seperate colour layers in a multilayered PSD to output a cmyk tif for printing - essentially simulating a 9+ colour job while controling overprint etc. Any advice on a way around would be appriciated. Thanks, Sam.

Photoshop and Illustrator aren't general PostScript readers. Then can read a subset of single page PostScript files. So let's look only at the Distiller problem. What EXACTLY happens with Distiller - please copy/paste any error messages. Aandi Inston

Thanks for that - Distiller is getting to a point and then getting stuck - have left running for 24 hours and not gone any further. Don't know if it's of help or not but Illy and P/Shop both open the files for other seperations of the problem map fine and also the problem seperations of other maps which are created exactly the same way (page size settings etc).

What point is Distiller at - does it have any current status on
screen?
Since PostScript is a programming language, it is possible for it to
loop forever. This one does
%!
{} loop
showpage
- it never finishes. Of course, that isn't useful, but maybe your PS
file is damaged or created wrong...

Thanks a lot for the input. Note it does open in Ghostscript and Prints directly to a Postscript printer (via copy at the command line - HP5000ps). Yes, with my limited knowledge I thought it must be a particular element/command that it's getting stuck on as it seems to process larger and more detailed files created the sameway without a problem. Varies depending on the file - 34% with the one I'm trying right now. Is there a way to get distiller to output the position its at as it runs - say output the ps commands it has processed so far - then if i crash out of distiller I can find what postscript it is getting stuck on?

Tracking down where you are is pretty tricky - it can be done on an error, but if you don't have one it's much harder. If programmatic terms you could try this: Read the PostScript file a line at a time, in a program that will preserve indefinitely long lines and binary data (vital!) Whenever you find a line starting with a %%, follow it with a new line (...\n) print flush The ... can be the line itself. That way you can track the progress of the file through %% lines, which are generally sprinkled liberally through the file. (But check that they ARE sprinkled liberally before investing much time). I've had to use this technique on occasion to deal with files that won't RIP. Aandi Inston

how is the new pstopdf commandline utility in Panther ? Has anybody evaluated its performance w.r.to Ghostscript etc., If a PS file has OPI comments (nexted OPI 2 and 1.3 comments) then does the PDF retain those comments ?

Interesting...ended up sending to our pre-press provider. They were able to rasterize for me - and all they did was take it into photoshop though on a Mac g4 and I'm on a HT P4 2.8...One for the Mac side I guess....though one of the four files they still couldn't rasterize or distill (it worked in Ghostscript and the HP5000ps RIP). Ain't technology wonderful....

And thanks Aandi, for your time and replies - though I think the problem was getting a bit over my head as far as under the bonnet postscript goes...Still find wierd that GScript and the HP print these files and a G4 can rasterize in Photoshop though I can't. Cheers, Sam.
