I have a piece of postscript that can call other postscript files to print. However, I would like to know if anybody has successfully tried this before. I don't know at this point if it's a limitation with printer's interpreter or it simply can't be done. When I try it the interpreter starts out OK then flushes the job as soon as it reads that the file is a PDF. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Jose

(1) The ability for PostScript to call other PostScript is implementation-specific. (2) PDF is not part of the PostScript specification. It cannot be called from PostScript as if it was a fragment of PostScript or in any other way other than if you converted the PDF into the equivalent of an EPS fragment. - Dov

Postscript level 3 printers boast the ability of "Direct consumption of PDF files up to PDF version 1.5". Why is it then not possible to have a Postscript frame around PDF pages? The advantages would be self-evident: * PDF gives smaller files, true page independence, far less chance of "flushing to end of file",... * Postscript allows to control the printer: Paper tray selection, stapling,... So, if it is not yet possible at present, should Adobe not try to make such a combination possible? Peter

>Postscript level 3 printers boast the ability of "Direct consumption of PDF files up to PDF version 1.5". Some do. It's an optional feature, not much taken up. >Why is it then not possible to have a Postscript frame around PDF pages? Because that wasn't what was designed. Nice idea, but it didn't happen. It's unlikely Adobe are to do more, since the licensing of the PDF feature was (it seems to me without the benefit of inside information) disappointing. Aandi Inston

Actually, there are no printers that boast the ability of direct consumption of PDF files up to PDF version 1.5. Adobe PostScript 3 devices that support PDF: (1) currently (as of October 22, 2003) only support PDF 1.4 or earlier depending upon date of the software AND (2) don't directly consume PDF. PDF is translated first to PostScript internally. It is the PostScript that is fully RIPped. There was never any specification for mixing-and-matching of PostScript with PDF. - Dov

Hi everybody,
There was never any specification for mixing-and-matching of PostScript
with PDF
In order to add more thoughts on this topic and defend --with real experience-- that the PostScript language level 3 is the *naturally language* to manage PDF files friendly; we have being working during a long time on this line, lots of our tools and parsers developed till now demonstrate:
1. 100% of the PDF DNA structure obeis the PostScript spirit.
2. A great number of artifacts and PDF objects (some object fonts, filters, dicts, etc) are directly executables inside the interpreter.
3. Manage the portions or the whole PDF file structure with the PS environment offers an easy and multiplatform opportunity to handle the Portable Document Format with naturality.
I hope my explanation will be clear and useful to you,

Technically, I understand what you are saying. However, it just isn't going to happen. Although "spirits" and syntax may have much in common, nothing else is in common. Management of PDF in print production environments will be accomplished in the future via JDF/JMF, absolutely NOT PostScript. - Dov
