Word 2002 hangs when printing to .ps file

When I try to print to file using a PostScript printer, the status bar says "Word is preparing to background print the document" and the progress indicator gets to about 33%; then Word freezes. I have to close it via the task manager. I'm not sure what PS driver I have, but I have Distiller 5.0.0.2. My computer is a P4 with 256 RAM running XP. I've tried running a file named Q329604_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe which is supposed to fix this, but the problem persists. Has anybody else had this problem?

Peter, q1. How large is the Word doc in Mb? q2. Are there any images (other objects ?) in that file? q3. What resolution in dpi are you using in the .PS defined printer you use? George

Hi George, thanks for the reply. 1. It's a big document: 500 pages, 5 megs. 2. There are many images (~100), all linked (not embedded). 3. The PS printer has no option for resolution; however, I get the same problem when I use Acrobat Distiller to produce a .ps. Distiller's graphic print quality is set to 1200.

Peter, most certainly you are running out of memory. The doc you try to print has to spool in the memory while converting to Postscript, before it's closed as *. PS saved to the disc. While spooling it creates a much bigger tmp file. Same for PDF through Distiller. One test is to define another postscript printer (out of the many available) that has the option to set dpi resolution to a lower one. Please also defrag your HDD. regards George

With Word2k I was not able to print, if the document contained grafics with resolutions higher than 300dpi. Maybe this the obstacle here, too.

Thank you George and Sandi for your very helpful suggestions! The problem has been resolved! I first tried printing to .ps file with graphics dpi of 300, and it printed fine. Then I tried 600,and it also worked fine. However, the graphics' quality was noticably inferior. I then defragged my HD, printed with the original 1200 dpi for graphics, and it worked fine. Thanks again, and please buy yourselves a drink this weekend and send the bill to me. ;)
