Thanks Daniel. Prior to geting your response, I contacted Microsoft support for IE7 and, on their suggestion, I uninstalled the IE 7 update and so rolled back to version 6. Here, everything works fine and PDF files open from links in web pages. Also, the acroIEhlpr.dll is showing in the manage Add-ons dialogue box in version 6. I am now waiting for M/S to get back to me to see what happens next - but maybe the dll had not registered properly with the update?
