I tried to install adobe reader 7 to replace version 6 about 3 different times over the past couple months and each time it failed to operate within firefox. Finally today, I had some time to go through the Adobe KB and found nothing helpful (I tried 328233 as recommended by PeterMcc; didn't work for me!), although it gave enough clues to finally figure out the solution eventually.

If I ran about:plugins in the firefox address bar, it would consistently report that reader 6 was the operative plugin even though it had been blown away by the version 7 install - well almost!

What DID work, it turns out was to manually copy file nppdf32.dll (version 7) from \program files\adobe\acrobat 7.0\reader\browser where the installer put it, into \program files\firefox\plugins where the installer had NOT put it and where nppdf32.dll (version 6) was still residing. Once I destroyed this file by overwriting with the version 7 copy, everything was hunky-dory.

Hopefully, this will save some other poor devil user from wasting two hours chasing this down!

I called the Tech Support number to ask that the installer actually complete the install instead of relying on manual intervention like this.

Version 7 is nice once it works!
