Manually uninstalling Reader 7.0 from Windows XP

Somehow I have a corrupt installation of Reader 7.0. When I open Reader, I get the message "This action is valid for products that are currently installed" with an OK button. When I try to re-install Reader, it says "This version of Adobe Reader is already present on your computer. Installation will now exit.". I can't install, I can't uninstall (there's nothing Adobe-related in Add/Remove Programs). I renamed the c:\Program Files\Adobe folder to Adobe.old in hopes of making that work (and so I can rename it back if I REALLY broke something). Any suggestions??? What does the installation program look for when it's installing? Thanks in advance for the help.
