Missing Select/Zoom Toolbar in Free Reader 8

Upon installing version 8 of the Free Reader, I find that the select/zoom toolbar does not display. The program's toolbar menu shows that this toolbar is selected, but I cannot find a way to display it. I'm running on a Dell Dimension 4500S with Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2(build 2600) and 256 MB RAM.
Surely the designers haven't chosen to eliminate select and zoom from the Free Reader, have they?
