"Olav Kvern" <okvern@adobe.com> wrote in message news:ef9f499.2@WebX.aaQKaf7vad4... Olav, Thank you for your insights. I'm well aware of the status of the Multiple Master technology, although I still think it's a wonderful thing. Fortunately, there are freesome open source tools available that allow generation of MM instances as Type 1 fonts, so it sort of guarantees indefinite support for MM fonts: http://www.lcdf.org/~eddietwo/type/ I myself quite like the idea propagated years ago by Hermann Zapf -- hence the HZ abbreviation for the line breaking algorithm used by URW and implemented in InDesign, as well as used in the open-source pdfTex program. I was always impressed by the typographic quality of Gutenberg's Bible, and belive that the HZ approach can work (after all, Adobe has implemented it in InD). > In any case, I can show you how to do points 1, 2, and 3, but 4 is going to be very difficult. Would you still like me to create an example script? That would be just excellent. I'm actually thinking along the idea of also using that approach with non-MM fonts that are supplied in several widths. Since I'm involved in OpenType font production, I'd think of creating a series of fonts provided with a wide range of discretionary widths that would not differ by large amount. I think in such case, the idea could still be realized. Needless to say, (but this has been handles just too often on the OpenType list and various typographic conferences, and is, in fact, under discussion just right now), it's a pity that the glyph variant technologies like MM or AAT never had a breakthrough. Best, Adam
