Ooh, I just remembered another great way to learn about fonts, that I'm sure no one except design students does anymore (and I'm not sure even they do it anymore).

I used to do textbook design before the advent of desktop design. We had to draw out sets of comps on tracing paper, with all the fonts including body text drawn well enough to be recognized by our clients, showing all the styles we designed and specc'ed that had occurred in the text (we also had to do an accurate page count from the hard copy and our chosen text fonts, and type out the complete set of type specs per style). Groan, groan. It really is amazing to remember, and see how far we've come in just a few years.

I'm really excited about opentype's influence on the future of typography. It will be a real revolution that I think most people don't see yet, especially when it is supported like it is in InDesign. The future looks great from here.
