Hi everybody, I'm new to Linux and get some problems. I"m using Mandrake 7.0 I'm unable to make my sound card detected and my modem too. I have a Soundblaster 16 PnP ISA (there is no jumper to change the com or irq) and an ActionTec ISA PnP 56K X2 Voice fax modem. (com4 irq3) What is the way to make it detect. Is there something like the Control Panel from the other OS ? Please, answer me by e-mail. Thanks to all Buzz P-)

Why are you crossposting to alt.linux.sux? You really only need to post it to alt.linux or alt.os.linux.mandrake, not five different groups. Why are you replying to my message if you don't have the answer. If you can't answer to my questions.....don't reply. The first thing you have to do is determine if you have PnP compiled into your kernel and if you have the isapnp tools. As root, try this; pnpdump -c > isapnp.conf <enter> Now have a look at the file you just created; less isapnp.conf <enter> You will notice most of it is commented-out - pay attention to those portions that aren't. Now, try this; isapnp isapnp.conf <enter> Let us know what messages, if any, you received. Best regards, Brian

(Though ISP's are being asked to support some form of scripting to automate this process for the Linux user's.) Speaking of which, you might want to bring it up when you call them :) DNS "Domain Name Service", it's what translates names into IP's.

I'm not able to go anywhere. Is there something I have to do that I don't know ? In Windows, I have a CD from my ISP that is configuring my account. What do I have to do to configur my account with Linux. ? Thanks to all for your support. When I had to configure my linux machine, I had searched a lot of sites but most of mentioned that DNS settings are automatic. I finally found one with DNS settins and which ran ppp. -- Vikram.V.Asrani (vikram@eecs.umich.edu)

Check out pppd man page; man pppd <enter> Look for "usepeerdns" - place this directive in your /etc/ppp/options files. Create a symbolic link from /etc/ppp/resolv.conf to /etc/resolv.conf like this; touch /etc/ppp/resolv.conf <enter> ln -s /etc/ppp/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf <enter> When ppp connects it creates dns entries in /etc/ppp/resolv.conf which are symbolically linked to /etc/resolv.conf - the standard Linux position for this file.
