Win2000/Linux LILO Question ?

I have a installed Win2000 on a machine in Hard Disk 1 and after that I installed Linux 7.1 on Hard Disk 2 on the same machine. When I start the machine, I do not see LILO coming up to give the option to whether to start Win2000 or Linux. It just starts Win2000 O/S as default. Does anyone know what do I need to do to be able to start LILO started.

Take the boot floppy (you did choose to make a boot floppy when prompted, right?) and boot into Linux. Then you have all the options you need. You can install lilo, if need be, or just continue to use the boot floppy whenever you want to run Linux. cu jjs

After you have installed both your OSs boot from the Linux cd 1. As soon as it comes to the point where you have to choose from expert mode or lowres or text etc .. --this is right at the beginnig-- type : vmlinuz root=/dev/<your root_partition_number_here> eg hdb1 This will boot the vmlinuz kernel with root filesystem the one you will specify. Some things might not work, or strange error messages might appear. Don't be worried. As soon as you can login (login in console not in the X), login as root. Check that the file /etc/lilo.conf meets your disk configuration and if it does type /sbin/lilo. this will rewrite lilo in the MBR. then if everything goes fine and no lilo error occured, type init 6 and you're ok!!!! Hope i helped, let us know what happened. Regards Chris.

Since LILO did mount, you will need to do the following things to do a dual
boot.
1. Use your Linux boot disk to boot up into Linux
2. Log into linux and open an environment
3. Log into that environment
4. Type the following command at the prompt?
dd if=/dev/hda2 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
(* Quick Note: hda2 is the partition of my hard drive where linux
is installed *)
5. This will create a file called bootsect.lnx.
6. Remove the linux boot disk from your floppy drive.
7. Insert a regular DOS disk into the floppy
8. Copy the bootsect.lnx file to the floppy using the following command at
the prompt
mcopy /bootsect.lnx a:
9. Remove the DOS floppy and reboot
10. When your system reboots it should boot in Windows
11. Log into your windows session and insert the DOS floppy back in
12. Copy the bootsect.lnx to the root dir of C:\
13. Now go to START | PROGRAMS | WINDOWS EXPLORER
14. Navigate to c:\boot.ini
15. Right click your mouse on it and uncheck the READ-ONLY
16. Edit the boot.ini file and add the following lines at the end (*
c:\bootsect.lnx="Redhat Linux Version 7.1" *) .
[boot loader]
timeout=05
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation
Version 4.00"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation
Version 4.00 [VGA mode]" /basevideo /sos
c:\bootsect.lnx="Redhat Linux Version 7.1"
17. Save the boot.ini file
18. Make the file READ-ONLY again
19. Remove the floppy and REBOOT your system
20. When the pc reboots, you should be able to see the menu and select
Windows or Linux

Another option would be to just tell LILO during the installation to install itself on the boot sector of the linux partition, and not in the MBR, right? br0wni3

If you didn't make bootup disk for linux then you will have to install all over again! make sure you made primary linux partitions before installing linux again you can do it with partition magic 6 .... However you would need to edit your RH7.1 FSTAB so that all partitions are on HDA and not HDB as they are currently. If your interested i'll post again. David

The RedHat installation CD's are bootable and offer a "rescue" option that mounts your local drives to something like "/sysimage". It should be possible to install lilo that way (either via lilo -R /sysimage/etc... or chroot /sysimage /sbin/lilo). Reinstalling the os should only be necessary as a last resort. -S On Tue, 25 Sep 2001 16:28:57 +0200, Valentina <vanyans@eunet.yu> wrote: >If you didn't make bootup disk for linux then you will have to install all >over again! make sure you made primary linux partitions before installing >linux again >you can do it with partition magic 6 .... >Tina > >Mamata Mahapatra <mmaha4752@home.net> wrote in message >news:ofTp7.38559$sM1.11990721@news3.rdc1.on.home.com... >> I have a installed Win2000 on a machine in Hard Disk 1 and after that I >> installed Linux 7.1 on Hard Disk 2 on the same machine. >> >> When I start the machine, I do not see LILO coming up to give the option >to >> whether to start Win2000 or Linux. Well, I recommend that you buy a distribution of Linux, ie.. SuSE, Redhat, Mandrake... I have Suse and it comes with 5 manuals, and you get support from the company. It is worth the money since most personal package distributions are $30, including CD's and manuals. The manual will definately tell you how to setup LILO, I know mine does (Suse 7.2). I would tell you, but it is rather lenghty for me to type.... yes after you had installed win2000 your master boot record of your harddisk was overwrited with the nt-loader! Your lilo loader was deleted! Install first win2000 and then linux or reinstall your lilo boot loader with /sbin/lilo and befor diskdump the win2000 loader!

Loading any NT from lilo is bad. NT comes with a bootloader. Simply add the partition with linux on it to your boot loader text file in windows. Indeed, I'm curious too. I've always done it this way.
1) Install NT/Win2k
2) Install Linux. Redhat will auto-detect the NT partition
and add it to the Lilo menu...

You need to boot from a linux CD. Once you've got a shell, you can mount your existing linux partition (e.g., mount /dev/hda /mnt), then run lilo again: chroot /mnt lilo -v Once you've got linux booting again, then you'll want to edit your lilo.conf file to add the winnt partition to the list of bootable partitions and run lilo again. Don't listen to the people who say that you can't boot winnt from lilo. Any recent version of lilo can do this easily. I've always done it the other way (I have so many computers now that I don't do dual-boot systems anymore, but I have done dual boot systems using Win95 and NT4 ... Never bothered with win2k, because at that point, like I said, I had enough boxes that dual booting was just silly). I've had problems doing it your way, and my research dug up several web pages that indicate the best way is to use Microsoft's boot loader when using NT. Obviously, if it works for you, it ain't broke and you shouldn't fix it. If it's not working for you, use Microsoft's boot loader.

It does (generally, see later) work for me, but I'm interested in knowing better ways to do it if it ever might not work. Of course, after using words like 'always', I now have a problem :-) I've just bought 5 new computers, 4 of which need to dual boot into win2k/linux. We partitioned the 40Gb disks into 2x20Gb partitions within the Win2k install procedure, and installed Win2k into the 1st partition. So far, so good. Redhat 7.1 highlights my '/' partition as invalid (red) because it starts after cylinder 1024. Should this be a concern, or should I just go ahead anyway. Before just buying more disks for everyone, I'd like to see if we could install linux into the 2nd 20G of disk space... Would I do better by installing Linux into the 1st 20Gb, then installing win2k into the 2nd 20Gb and using the Win2k bootloader ? ATB, Simon.

I've done installs with RedHat like this... just do the install in text mode or expert mode. Add the flag lba32 to the lilo configuration and it should go just fine. Jim
