T39m resets and turns off randomly

Hi all,

I have a T39m which in the past couple of weeks has begun turning itself off
randomly. Also last night when I tried to compose an email on it, each time
I tried to enter an email address it would reset itself (i.e.. go back to
the pin entry screen). This happened about 8 times in a row before it
worked properly again.

My question is: is this phone fixable or will the phone need to be replaced?
I would prefer the first option as my experience with the 2nd option is that
I usually have to be without my phone for at least 3 weeks before I receive
a replacement (as would most likely be the case this time as Sony-Ericsson
have said they have no stock of the T39 at the moment). If the phone is not
fixable, will the problem remain as it is or will it just keep getting
worse?

Sony-Ericsson have told me that the resetting sounds like it might be a
software issue (I currently have R4A008) but the turning off sounds more
like a firmware issue, in which case, they would most likely need to replace
rather than fix it, does this sound accurate?

If anyone has any knowledge or experience of such problems with a T39m I
would appreciate any information you can give me.

Thanks!

I have a R520m (which is almost identical to T39m internally) which used to
reboot on its own after a firware upgrade. It was reflashed and exchanged
but problem persisted. Then I had the phone flashed at a different service
point and the problem went away.

Hi Rainy,
my t39m has had other strange behaviour with R4A008 like
hangups. I figured that it is related in my case to memory-full
conditions. Since I know that, I am taking care of not letting
SIM and RAM running to full conditions and my t39m is happy.

regards
Bertil

What is the date code on your handset?

(On the handset's IMEI sticker of the form 0-w--)

You could try a "Master reset", although you will lose your settings.

(settings, Master Reset).

This *can* help clear up glitches like this.

That's a good suggestion I should investigate. I have similar reset and
freeze problems too on my T39, and my phone-addressbook's memory is
full.

Thanks for all suggestions and info. In answer to the questions asked:
1. It is 02W13. Is this important?
2. Neither the sim nor phone memory are anywhere near full (in fact they
are emptier than they have been in months!).
3. The master reset is a good idea to try before handing my phone over to a
service centre.

Oh dear.

Sounds like a typical Ericsson software problem, take it to a service centre
and get the software upgraded. If the phone turns itself off and stays off,
it's more a battery contact problem from my experience, but if it reboots,
that's normal for a software glitch with an Ericsson handset.

Don't worry, I have had 2 t68i all do the same.
1. returned to Sony, "repaired" sent back, then it wouldn't even accept a
sim card.
2. still resets, but has the additional problem of "No Access" instead of
"Orange" being displayed, funny as sometimes it shows max reception when
this appears

My old A1018s would display something similar when out of Telstra coverage,
but had full Optus reception. Maybe this is what's happening?

My T39m re-booted itself to the PIN prompt while I wasn't using it,
three or four times, a couple of weeks ago. It worries me because I had
the same symptom on an earlier T28, and that was a hardware problem.

In the case of the T39 I subsequently discovered the SMS memory was
nearly full, and I went through and deleted most of the old messages.
It may be coincidence, but I haven't had it re-boot since.
