      Good one, funny.  It seems like people who look older than they
really are live longer - like Walter Brennan for instance.  But that
could all be in my head.  Brennan was playing older people on the
screen, so people came to see him as an older person in real life.
Then, as he continued to live on, it seemed like forever because people
assumed he was older than he really was.  Plus, let's face it, if an
old looking guy dies it's not as thrilling as when a young longshot
bites the big one.  Yes, no doubt Dick Clark will age in big fat
crumbling hurry, and in fact it's probably already happening, as Dick
has remained out of the public eye for some time, which is usually a
pretty good sign that something not so pretty is going on.

      Since there's no money involved in the pool, why not throw in an
offbeat pick?  Planes go down, don't they?  And those big tour buses
slide into ditches once in a while.  Plus she's fat.  She's young
enough to hide it, but she's got clogged arteries, I can tell just by
looking at her.  She's a Southerner.  As a group they don't eat very
well...........

       I thought of the death pool concept over 40 years ago.  I'm sure
the idea is as old as time itself.  It's good to see it being put to
use.  But I'd love to be in a really well organized pool with  cash
involved.  When I made those picks I just breezed through.  It became a
chore after I'd gone through half my picks.  I was saying to myself,
"Jeezus, how long is this going to take, how many more are there?"  I
didn't put as much effort into it as I would prefer.

      Oh, by the way, years ago I was in a death pool with my best
friend and the girl I lived with.  I put about sixty names of famous
celebs in a hat and we each took twenty.  Then we wrote them down in a
ledger.  After a few months my friend won the first one with John
Wayne.  My girl friend won one too, but I can't recall who she had.
The closest I came was when Walter Pigeon went into the hospital with
some kind of ailment and emerged with a clean bill of health a few days
later.  Son of a bitch!
