I have a ELSA Erazor X graphics card with a nVidia GeForce 256 chipset. Suddenly one day my screen went a tab bit darker and every window casted a shadow horizontally across the screen. I asked a techie at CompUSA about it and he said I may have a virus on the card. He said to get rid of the virus, simply get a new card or fdisk my boot drive. I tried the latter and that didn't help. I removed the card and dust busted it and the whole motherboard thoroughly. Nothing. Any ideas? Do I really need a new card? What exactly could the problem be? Thanx in advance, twashing@mail.comNOSPAM P.S. - I haven't tested the card in another machine because I do not want to spread a potential virus.

Virus on a video card? That's a new one. Boy, those CompUSA guys are quite creative at boosting their sales. First, if you are overclocking the card and you've been doing this for a while, you might stop overclocking it and see what happens. If you still have the problem, the card could be fried. I'd also try updating your video drivers. In addition, I'd check to make sure your monitor cable is tightly attached to the card -- I've seen what you are describing happen with a loose cable. Better yet, if that doesn't help and you have another monitor handy, give that one a whirl. If all else fails, you probably have a card that went caput or is flawed. I'd check to see if your warranty is still valid and send it back to be checked out. -- Rob "Another User" <twashing@mail.comNOSPAM> wrote in message news:nN7M8.14584$2h1.2623981@twister.nyroc.rr.com... > I have a ELSA Erazor X graphics card with a nVidia GeForce 256 chipset. > Suddenly one day my screen went a tab bit darker and every window casted a > shadow horizontally across the screen. What exactly could the problem be? The problem is you're depending too much on an incompentent CompUSA employee. Video card don't get virus. Since you fdisked your drive, it's likely you already reinstalled everything so that ruled out bad video driver, problem with Windows itself, etc. And the symptom you're describing sounds more likely your monitor may be failing. Try using the monitor on another PC. If you see the same thing, plan on getting a new monitor in the near future. If the monitor checks out fine, then your video card could be going bad. And next time, don't ask CompUSA any technical question! -- email link has been removed due to a flood of W32.Klez virus that kept trying to get in my inbox. All viruses are automatically removed by my ISP before reaching my inbox.

Video Card viruses are a SERIOUS problem! I once had a virus on my Voodoo Banshee card, and the only way I could get rid of it was to wrap my card in tinfoil and install the MiniGLs. -- http://xenomorph.net/ "Another User" <twashing@mail.comNOSPAM> wrote in message news:nN7M8.14584$2h1.2623981@twister.nyroc.rr.com... > I have a ELSA Erazor X graphics card with a nVidia GeForce 256 chipset. > Suddenly one day my screen went a tab bit darker and every window casted a > shadow horizontally across the screen. I heard vasoline is also required on the tinfoil to get the virus to stick to the tinfoil. -- Rob "Xenomorph" <spam@spam.com> wrote in message news:sZ9M8.10313$qa6.1591646348@newssvr11.news.prodigy.com... > Video Card viruses are a SERIOUS problem! > > I once had a virus on my Voodoo Banshee card, and the only way I could get > rid of it was to wrap my card in tinfoil and install the MiniGLs. > >

i really depends on the direction of the wind,,,, i cant remember which direction is bad so we are all doomed. unless u are lucky enough to have a s3 based card then your ok as no software will run on it, not games not the drivers and no virus. To be technical, code does run in a video card's Video BIOS, but there never has been a virus embedded like that yet. :) Same is possible with your mainboard virus also. :) There has been viruses which intentionally try to delete the contents of your modem's flash code, or your mainboard of video BIOS code. Nasty virus's but right now, virus makers are lazy, just doing easy e-mail or macro virus crap received through e-mail. Lazy, lazy lazy. :) On the other hand, they are getting pretty good. The KLAZ virus apparently looks for you to install an antivirus program and refuses to let you by forcing the abort of the antivirus software installation. The Klaz virus is a very annoying little shit.
