Little problem:
I will use UDMA with my HD Maxtor DiamonMax 3400 (master on primary, with
Quantum Fireball - PIO 4 as slave) and the AOpen 36-speed CD-drive (master
on secondary, with Philips CDD 3610 CD-RW - PIO 3 as slave).
If I enable UDMA in the BIOS, WIN98 hangs. When I disable UDMA in the BIOS
and let WIN98 detect the Maxtor-HD and the Aopen-CD-drive, everything seems
to be OK: the DMA-boxes in the drivers panel are clicked in each case.
Test results with WinTune 98:
Cached Disk = 43,104 MB/s
Uncached Disk = 1,792 MB/s
After reading several messages in this NG, I am confused, apparently both
the BIOS and the DMA-box must be enabled in order to have UDMA.
Now, is my HD using UDMA or not ???
Thanks and regards,
Willy

Try a very short two connector only EIDE cable for the Maxtor alone and see if UDMA mode works. If that fixes UDMA mode then get a cable from www.ultracable.com and reconnect both the Maxtor and Fireball. > When I disable UDMA in the BIOS > and let WIN98 detect the Maxtor-HD and the Aopen-CD-drive, everything seems > to be OK: the DMA-boxes in the drivers panel are clicked in each case. Results of HDTach:
MAXTOR : Read burst: 12.6 mbps
Random access time 16.7 ms
CPU usage: 15.2 %
FIREBALL : : Read burst: 7.4 mbps
Random access time 17.1ms
CPU usage: 51.4 %

Double cause: 1. The clock frequency should be 66MHz but was set to 75MHz. This prevented the Maxtor to use UDMA (this cable was not to long). After resetting the clock to 66MHz and disabling the secondary controller, it worked fine with both the BIOS and the DMA-checkbox in WIN98 enabled. 2. The EIDE-cable to the secondary controller was really to long. Rearrange some things in the computer let me use a shorter one: no problems anymore. Nevertheless I will buy the special UDMA-cables, I believe it will be more reliable. New results of HDTach for the MAXTOR: Read burst: 16.6 mbps Random access time 23.7 ms CPU usage: 17.1 % Thanks !

Hi WIlly, I have a simular problem. Read this message I sent about a week ago to ASUS, but still no reply. --start quote message --- I just finished a long conversation with the tech support of Maxtor. A few weeks ago I installed a Seagate MedialistPRO 9.1 GB 7200 rpm UDMA/33 drive in my ASUS TX97-E system. I have tried both the 1.08 BIOS and latest beta BIOS and still keep having a performance problem. I installed the drive under Windows 98 with BIOS Harddrive AUTO, mode AUTO, UDMA Auto. I use the UDMA cable to connect the drive. It is partitioned in 4 FAT 32 partitions. Performance with DMA checked ON in Win 98 System settings gives a performance of about 5.6 MB/s. DMA OFF makes it go up (!!!??) to 6.3. The same problem is also happening with my new Maxtor 10 GB 7200 rpm drive, same settings, same performance issue. The Maxtor tech rep told me that this particular harddisk is the industrie standard best at this moment and should at least give a performance of 12 MB/s or more and performance with DMA ON should be better than with DMA OFF. He told me, as there are no other causes in my system, it *must* be a driver (win 98) and/or BIOS problem, because with DMA on the performance decreases in stead of increasing. So it looks like an incompatibility problem when DMA is turned on. He suggested me to ask ASUS for a fixed driver or BIOS fix. HD Tach results with DMA ON(!) Read speed maximum 14,7 mb/s, minimum 10,8 MB/s and average 13,2 MB/s. CPU 20,4 % ---end quote of message--- Curious to see if anybody can solve this? Regards, Reinier de Groot. NB. if possible, please reply to my e-mail address.

I reported that my problem was solved and I believe it is so.
BUT: I REPORTED THE WRONG TESTRESULTS:
I mistaked the value of read burst with the one of Random Access.
The results after solving the problem are:
Random Access: 16.6 ms (not 23.7)
Read Burst: 23.7 mbps (not16.6)
Thanks for the reactions,
Willy

Hi Ron, Burst mode shows 22 MB/s. CPU load 23%. Is this the performance to be expected with my Maxtor 2500 UDMA/33 ? Any other suggestions? Regards, Reinier. Try a very short <=12" two connector only EIDE cable and see if HDTach's read burst goes up or CPU usage goes down. If it improves then stick with the short cable or try a cable from www.ultracable.com
