Right.. I am having trouble with the cdrom. If I play a music cd I can not hear it through the speakers. I can however hear it if I plug a headset into the jack on the cd rom itself (not the jack on the soundcard) My sound works with all my games and win 95. Has anyone got a clue what this could be? ps.. I have had the machine apart and the cable from the cd to the sound card is in tact. this problem has only become apparent since I am trying to make mp3. I have tried several mp3 makers and I get a read error all the time. I am sure that it is because my cd rom is not co-operating with the rest of my system. thanks in advance for any help. ps... system specs. p120 24 RAM 4x cd rom (goldstar) opti 16 sound card win 95

Sometimes you have more than one connection possebilety mayby it's not connected right. What also can be is that in the options that you have from your soundcard you have the cd disabled. Have a look there that's the only things I can think about. Regards Harm gerrits

well well.. let me see how far I got tonight.. I think my first problem si my opti sound card which I am really starting to dispise!.. the sound card is set up to ignore the cdrom. in the setup for the soundcard it asks if you want to use the ide port on the sound card or the motherboard. I choose the m/b and it decided to put a command in my config.sys file to turn my cd off. So I spent 2 hours figuring that out and ended up deleting my ide drivers/ cdrom and sound card and set it all up again. Once again the sound card decided to interfer with the config.sys and put lines in there relating to the cdrom. So I went and deleted all of them and reinstalled mcexc or what ever the hell that cd rom thing is. Now I have my cd back but I can't play audio cd's through ANY program. I can however hit the play button on the front of my cd and listen to music. This is only a problem with audio. Data cd's have no trouble. I am convinced that this is a problem with the setup files in the soundcard although I have downloaded every f..g file relating to this sound card and they all did the same thing.. I built this system and when I set it up the very first time it did not ask me what ide interface I wanted to use. That is a new thing! Not sure where it came from. ok programs I have tried ripping cds with. audio grabber easy da extractor 3 music match 4 hgerrits wrote in message <01bf12f6$a2180080$258a86c2@ns>... >Sometimes you have more than one connection possebilety mayby it's not >connected right. >What also can be is that in the options that you have from your soundcard >you have the cd disabled. >Have a look there that's the only things I can think about. >Regards Harm gerrits > >

OK, On your computer you have one of two configs. Either, one grey set of wires and another small wire plugging directly into your sound card and CD-Rom. OR The grey set goes to your mainboard. DO NOT TOUCH THE GREY SET OF WIRES. Check the other cable. This is the only cable which has anything to do with your problem. Is it in the right sockets (ie analog NOT digital output on cd-rom) Hope this helps you. cowboy <cowboyz@actrix.gen.nz> wrote in message news:37ff0720@news.actrix.gen.nz... > Right.. The opti sound cards have always been a bastard of a card to set up, Considering the price of a new card is cheap these days I would seriously consider binning the opti and replacing it with a new card. "Creative" are the easiest of them all to set up and I recon the most compatible of cards with games. You can get a cheap sondblaster just about anywhare, If you can't get a creative get a ess card they arn't to bad Jim On Sun, 10 Oct 1999 22:25:38 +1300, "cowboy" <cowboyz@actrix.gen.nz> wrote: >well well.. let me see how far I got tonight.. not onto the hard drive.. it delivers a read error message no matter what program I am using at the start of ripping a file. however if I hit play cd then it will play perfectly through the headphone jack. I haven't my cdr connected yet so I don't know if I can copy direct. I have been contacted by another person who has the same problem so I will email him and ask him if he can. (he has the same setup as me) joe_indoors๏ฟฝ wrote in message <7tn1ld$gbm$1@fraggle.esatclear.ie>... >can you rip tracks from cd's in wav format? > >cowboy <cowboyz@actrix.gen.nz> wrote in message >news:37ff0720@news.actrix.gen.nz... >> Right.. Well it may be intact, but it seems pretty obvious that it's not working. If you can hear the CD playing when you plug earphones into the jack on the drive, then clearly the drive *is* playing the CD. And that cable that connects the drive to your soundcard should be taking the analogue audio signal and putting it directly into the analogue part of your soundcard for output to your speakers. So... if you're not hearing anything... well we know your drive is working, so either the cable is not plugged in properly at both ends or is damaged, or your soundcard is broken. BTW, even if you can't hear CDs playing, you should still be able to rip from CDs, so long as you are ripping digitally (i.e. using Digital Audio Extraction), since DEA doesn't use the analogue connection between your CD drive and your soundcard at all... >this problem has only become apparent since I am trying to make mp3. I >have tried several mp3 makers and I get a read error all the time. I am >sure that it is because my cd rom is not co-operating with the rest of my >system. Well what program are you using to rip? Have you got it set up for Digital Audio Extraction? If you're trying to do analogue rips, that certainly won't work if the analogue transfer from your CD drive to your soundcard isn't working. But a "read error" sounds more like a *digital* extraction problem. It's possible that your CD drive doesn't support DAE - some older drive don't... Firstly the IDE setting has *nothing* to do with the audio output - it's asking you whether you want to enable the IDE connection on the sound card - this is essentially a disk controller connection, a data connection for a CD ROM (not the analogue audio connection). Where does the big flat ribbon cable from your CD ROM drive connect to? (The one that's about 1 1/2 - 2 inches across, usually pale grey or pale blue, with a red line down one side...) If that cable connects to the soundcard, *then* you want to enable the IDE interface on the soundcard, otherwise don't. Again, this has *nothing* to do with playing CD audio through the sound card! There is another cable that comes out of the CD drive, a thin little cable, just two or three strands of wire, a millimetre or so thick, with a small rectangular connector a little over 1/4 inch across on the end - *that* is the analogue audio connector, and it should always be connected to your soundcard - there should be a place, normally on the corner of the card, where three square pins stick up, and that analogue audio connector plugs onto them... usually it will say something like "audio in" beside it. the hd is conencted directly to the m/b .. now for some creative reason I can't even play a cd through win 95. I can however hit the play button on my cd and listen to music that way (but not through the sound card) .. When I have some time I might try deleting the whole lot and reinstalling win95 as last night my computer decided to reset itself several times and restart in safe mode. seems to be running fine this morning but it is not feeling too happy.! Ouch! It sounds as if you've got things rather messed up. Actually I wasn't asking if the har disk was connected to the mother board... I was asking if the CD ROM ribbon cable was connected to the sound card or not. If the CD ROM ribbon cable is connected to the sound card, then you definitely need to enable the sound card IDE connection in order to use the CD ROM drive. On the other hand, if the CD ROM drive ribbon cable is *not* connected to the sound card, you should disable the IDE connection on the sound card. In any case, the thin audio cable from the CD ROM drive should always be connected to the sound card. In your position, I'd be sort of tempted to try "removing" the CD ROM drive from within Windows, and maybe even "removing" the sound card too, if you're not sure it's driver are installed properly. Then shut down the machine, open up the case, and make sure the sound card and CD ROM drive are connected properly, and than any jumpers on the sound card are set properly. Then when you boot up the machine again, hopefully Windows will recognise the sound card and CR ROM as "new hardware". Unfortunately, there's a potential for a Catch-22 situation here, since Windows may want to access the Windows CD to load files associated with "new hardware", and if you don't have a working CD ROM drive, how do you give Windows the CD? If you have another machine available, you sometimes get around this problem by figuring out which file Windows wants, and the extracting it from the CD manually on the other machine, and transferring it on a floppy disk. As you say, reinstalling Windows from scratch will probably fix the problem as well, so long as you have things connected right when you do the reinstall. But then that takes a while, and often cause unpleasant side effects... Good luck! I meant to say cd not hd. sorry... now however i have my cdr on ide2 and i WAS going to put the cdrom in with it but I have no power connectors left??!!!
