i`m trying to install win 98se on a compaq desktop,, the harddisk( a 1.6 Gb quantum)had windows 95 on it before, which i rebooted in dos and formatted,,i also ran fdisk on the 98 start up floppy and deleted all partitions as i suspected that there was a virus on the disk, then 98setup did a format,,and starts the blue set up screen``enter to continue`` then scan disk runs and then i get a blank screen with...Standard mode:fault outside of ms dos extender. EC=0000 CS=0337 IP=C199 AX=0000 BX=0000 CX=0040 DX=FFFF SI=0000 DI= 0000 BP=016E DS=036F ES=0000 SS=027F SP=0166 Please romove any floppy disks from your drives and press any key to restart your system. i tried another disk and it gave me the same message,,,i know that both of these disks are ok,,so i guess its something i did with the fdisk program..last week i did the same procedure on the compaq with a 4.3 gb disk and that installed 98 ok..i cleared the cmos aswell to see if that helped,,but no luck there,,, so if anyone can help i would really be grateful. Thanks Paul

Also in the BIOS make sure the Boot Block Anti-Virus option is disabled if there is one as the windows install can be balked by this option. HTH

But, I can't take all the credit, Bill Watt posted a link to a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that should have got you there without my help. > "Mario Digerati" <joeking@invalid.net> wrote in message > news:a589hh$5eevb$1@ID-108846.news.dfncis.de... > > > > "PAUL" <p-e-f@get2net.dk> wrote in message > news:UTzd8.160$wo5.5157@news.get2net.dk... > > > i`m trying to install win 98se on a compaq desktop,, the harddisk( a 1.6 > Gb > > > quantum)had windows 95 on it before, which i rebooted in dos and > > > formatted,,i also ran fdisk on the 98 start up floppy and deleted all > > > partitions as i suspected that there was a virus on the disk,then > 98setup > > > did a format,,and starts the blue set up screen``enter to continue`` > then > > > scan disk runs and then i get a blank screen with...Standard mode:fault > > > outside of ms dos extender. > > > EC=0000 CS=0337 IP=C199 AX=0000 BX=0000 CX=0040 DX=FFFF SI=0000 > > > DI= 0000 BP=016E DS=036F ES=0000 SS=027F SP=0166 > > > > > > This is often an issue with memory software can easily find, go here > > http://www.teresaudio.com/memtest86/ and test your memory.
