Luxury super-yacht industry booming! Baby yachts (under 30 meters)? Pathetic. Can't give 'em away. But grownup yachts (60+ meters)? Now, _there's_ a boat! Luxury super yacht builders around the world report huge demand for their products, Britain, Spain, Italy, Turkey (not the U.S., though). Leading yacht insurer estimates that the market for boats bigger than twenty meters has grown from about 800 in 1990 to *30,000* today. Whee! We're in the money! http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=oddlyEnoughNews&story ID=2006-09-15T134452Z_01_ANT520654_RTRUKOC_0_US-LUXURY-YACHTS.xml&pageNum ber=1&imageid=&cap=&sz=13&WTModLoc=NewsArt-C1-ArticlePage1 or http://tinyurl.com/pvx2d Also see: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06257/721814-28.stm

The exploration, drilling, pumping, pipelines, tankers and storage facilities are all free for the taking, so go for it. -- Bert Hyman | St. Paul, MN | bert@iphouse.com

Too bad. Maybe you can find an unclaimed "cantaloupe dynasty" or something. It certainly beats trying to invent an entire industry from scratch, doesn't it? -- Bert Hyman St. Paul, MN bert@iphouse.com

Care to share how you arrived at it? You can't figure it out? You admit to spending money and giving it to oil companies, then bitch that they make a profit.

Not sure what the oil companies in particular have to do with it, though they certainly make out fueling these things- they burn a lot of fuel. Of course in this country Bush's tax cuts have fueled this kind of thing- all part of the War on Terror; yachtsmen keeping an eye on the world's waterways, etc.

Perhaps the thinking goes along these lines... They must commute to work and there is no viable public transit. (Viable public transit dismantled by oil & auto companies.) They must buy from the oil companies because there are no alternatives available to fuel their personal vehicle. (Electric vehicles taken out of hands of leaseholders and then crushed.) They observe that the oil companies manipulate prices and reap staggeringly huge profits in the process. They observe that the oil companies use these staggering profits to pay staggering amounts of money to a small handful of people who run the companies. They then complain about getting screwed while the CEO's laugh themselves into a coma on a yacht trip to an off-shore bank. It's like admitting to paying 'protection' money and then complaining when they burn down your place of business and break your legs anyhow. Anthony

I thought maybe I had killfiled him (he's definitely in contention with Rod Speed for killworthy articles), but no, there is no such filter here. Maybe he cancelled his article, but not before you caught it. Anyway if I *had* seen the response, I would have noted that I certainly never complained or bitched or whined in my original article. I never even complained about spending money for gas. It just looked like "connect-the-dots" to me. Record oil company profits followed a few months later by a massive boom in luxury yacht sales. Nah, it couldn't be. I just posted about the boom in giant luxury yachts and postulated maybe *that* might be where the record profits collected by oil companies over the last year might have gone. What's so bad about that? Seems to me that ol' Bert and Larry are just a mite bit sensitive to the whole subject. OTOH, It's always highly entertaining watching parasites fight to defend their host. Now, me, see, I LOVE the oil companies. I have the privilege of having my nose so far up oil company executives' rectums that I could be a Republican assemblyman. Any further with the nose, and they might choke. I love the smell of crude in the morning. Hell, I hope they buy a yacht the size of the Exxon Valdez and hire a drunk to pilot it around New York Harbor. I say, MORE public money for roads, industry and infrastructure that promotes oil use! It's the free market, I say! Whisper the word, "subsidy" and prove you are a pinko fag commie. What's good for BP is good for Alaska! God Bless America.

No one "created" the food you're eating either. You want free gasoline, get it your lf if it's so easy. "Just pump it from the ground"... shows how simplistic your mind is.

How's that? In most places, so-called "public transit" is a coercive government monopoly. Of course, when you demand that corrupt politicians be placed in charge of such important functions, don't be surprised to wake up one day and find that corrupt politicians are in charge of such important functions. -- Bert Hyman St. Paul, MN bert@iphouse.com
