I'm a newbie and I have bought the APC mag Linux pocket book, excellent thing, and I've followed the commands about making another user besides root, (when I log on as root it's fine, I can use any xwindown thingy and do everything), so as not to stuff anything up. I did create another user and made a password, I log on and do startx, it gets to the grey screen with a cursor but stops, it goes no further, the only option I have is by clicking on the screen and selecting exit FVMN, or something like that. Any ideas?? Thanks, Daniel.

If you do this you'll most likely have to change the ownership and permissions of the files once they have been copied to your home directory, use chmod & chown to do this. /usr/X11/lib/X11/xinit/ (xinitrc & Xclients) j. >Paul U Cameron >Research Fellow, Department of Microbiology and Immunology >University of Melbourne >ph +613 9347 9758 fx +613 9347 2052

Try coppying the .xinitrc, .Xclients and .Xdefaults files from root to your user directory and see if it cures your problem. If it does you then need to set up the system wide defaults. In RH they should be in the /etc/X11 directories or in the /usr/X11R6/ directory tree. -- Paul U Cameron Research Fellow, Department of Microbiology and Immunology University of Melbourne ph +613 9347 9758 fx +613 9347 2052

Any ideas?? Check that all of the files in /etc/X11 are readable by any user. chmod -R a+rX /etc/X11 Run startx with startx -- -bpp 16 >/tmp/X 2>&1 and look into /tmp/X Finally, you could have network problems, in that for some weird reason some of the scripts in for example AnotherLevel make a network call. (Can't remember why anymore but it was a problem I had)
