I'm trying to install wp80 on my system but I just can't do it. Could someone explain to me in VERY simple terms how to do it? I've been trying to install it for three days now and I'm starting to see why people use Microsoft software :( Thanks Pants I have my cdrom drive mounted but can't get much further......

Just rpm the WP8.0 file and it will install it. Then use xwp (I think) to run the program from the command line. Worked for me! Give this a shot. put GUILG00.GZ in a directory like /home/user/wp8 then cd into that directory. The
user part can be whatever user account you want to use.
cd /home/user/wp8
gzip -dvf GUILG00.GZ
tar -xvf GUIL00
./Runme
See if that works.

The .gz extension indicates a gnuzipped file. It is probably tar'ed as well. You can unzip it with gunzip filename.gz and then use tar tvf filename or in one run with tar xzvf filename. > It could be that there is an RPM lurking under the .gz if so then what you > should do is type "tar -z <filename>". You have an odd version there! All of the versions I have seen have been in RPM format. There will be .gz versions out there but I would hope that you could find an RPM version. It could be that there is an RPM lurking under the .gz if so then what you should do is type "tar -z <filename>". If after this you have an rpm file in that directory then you can follow my original instructions. If not then I am afraid I can't help (I am a newbie myself and I only answered your original question because I have successfully installed wp8 myself). If you don't find an RPM under the .gz then if your email can handle it I can send you the RPM file. Or alternatively you can ask the more advanced members of this newsgroup for help (it might help to use a subject like "FAO gurus" or something like that). Whenever you want to find out what a file really is. Use the command 'file'
#file Wine-990214.diff.gz
Wine-990214.diff.gz: gzip compressed data, deflated, last modified: Sun Feb 14 15:31:35 1999, max compression, os: Unix
^^^^
You can easily see that this is a compressed file. It was made with the program
gzip. Just gunzip it.
#gunzip Wine-990214.diff.gz
#file Wine-990214.diff
Wine-990214.diff: 'diff' output text
^^^^

First of all, WP8.0 is NOT available in rpm format. The only exception to this might be if you got it as part of a Linux distribution, but I don't recall hearing that any distributions have done this yet. It is true, however, that older versions of WordPerfect are around in rpm format. Next, about your installation problems. Check some of the above threads in corelsupport.wordperfect-linux. Some people fell victim to a bug in Netscape in which Netscape decompresses the gz file without removing the gz extension (or the extension gz is removed without decompressing it, I don't remember which). If your downloaded file lacks the .gz extension, gunzip won't decompress it even if it is still the correct filetype. So, just do a 'mv' to change the name to something with a .gz extension. If you get completely frustrated, you might try downloading it again using a real ftp program such as the command 'ftp' (or 'ncftp' if your distribution has it) from your command shell. Good luck!
