As far as I know, Gateway does *not* check this. You can use a different credit card with a different name on it and they really won't care. I'm speaking from first-hand experience here. I never had reason, or motive, to defraud Gateway; rather, I'm a consultant and sometimes had to replace parts for my customers using my own credit card for security. And it was never an issue. Techs were happy to help me, were glad to talk to someone who knew what he was doing <g>, and didn't care that my name/billing info didn't match up with what was on the account. They just wanted to do their jobs, as tech support reps. But your mileage may vary. ----------------------------------- Ben Edelman BEdelman@ix.netcom.com -----------------------------------

Gateway didn't ship quad speed CD-ROM until about 50 days ago. I think the bottom line is (Speaking from a point of view of someone who has had - and returned - a Solo Notebook) that you realized that there are MUCH better machines that do multimedia MUCH cheaper and look better. I think the bottom line is (Speaking from a point of :view of someone who has had - and returned - a Solo Notebook) that you :realized that there are MUCH better machines that do multimedia MUCH :cheaper and look better. Actually it is that old. Gateway shipped me the 4x CD-ROM (free) when it came out during my 30-day whatever-they-call-it. I was very surprised, especially after all the negative threads I've read here. My personal experience with GW has been nothing but the most professional and courteous. As for the bottom line, I am a consultant who travels frequently to various clients for short assignments. At the time I purchased my Solo, it was perfect for me. However, now I am on a long-term assignment at a local client and have no need for a laptop. When I need to transfer data between work and home I just bring in a Zip disk. My needs can be better (and less expensively) met with a desktop system for home. If I still needed a laptop, I would still be extremely pleased with my Solo. I really have no desire in sticking anyone with a machine that they're not happy with or can not get support for. My entire professional career is built around providing people with good experiences with computer products and services. I believe my asking price is fair and I will do whatever is necessary to provide the buyer with technical support, even if it means doing so myself. Oh, and by the way -- I forget to mention before that this has an active matrix screen. Alan ------------------------------------------------------------------- Alan M. Although I would never encourage anyone do anything illegal, immoral, or even fattening <g>, it would appear a non-original purchaser can get some support by saying they were paid to repair the system for the original owner. So I would guess the original owner could rent/lease the system to anyone and support would still available. Lease it for 20 years for a one time payment of $$$ and include in the deal a provision that the renter will keep it in good repair and he is paid $ to maintain it. Sounds like a plan to me <g> Regards, Dennis M. Maurer
