Hi,

I'm trying to get java compiler and interpreter to run on my linux
box.

When I run the compiler I get the following error:

/usr/jdk118/bin/linux/native_threads/java: error in loading shared
libraries
/usr/jdk118/lib/linux/native_threads/libjava.so: undefined symbol:
__bzero

Can someone help me please,

L

Hello,

I run the Sun jdk_v117a on Redhat 5.2, kernel 2.0.36 which also used to
run on redhat 5.1(2.0.34). I have has no problems with this (except its
slow). I know that the IBM jdk requires libc6(glibc 2), thus only runs
on Redhat 6.0+, I am pretty sure that this is the case with the
Blackdown 2.0+ jdk's as well.

Ok the reason for all these library problems is the switch from libc5 to
glibc2.0. This makes binaries from Redhat 5.2- incompatible with Redhat
6.0+. (If your using RedHat 5.0 you probably know most of the details,
but it was probably linux's biggest blunder).

So you either have to get the sun jdk (If you can't find it I have a
copy, try rufus.w3.org and look for libc5 contribs for RedHat) or
upgrade to a Linux system that uses glibc 2.0. (I think all of the
recent ones are).

Hope this helps

PS I assume you are using the IBM compiler and interpreter?

Hi,

Thanks for your input,
Yes, I am using the IBM package, you're right.

I was tossing up whether to upgrade the kernel and
install glibc2.0,
but will that impact on other stuff that I have on my system?

I don't have a lot of applications that I use on the linux box,
I use it mainly for textprocessing with vi. I do have X installed with
an fvwm windows manager and I am running SAMBA.
I have a network with 3 windows98 machines and 2 linux boxes.

If upgrading to glibc2.0 does impact on the rest of the system, I
might have to consider your suggestion or upgrade the complete system
(actually I don't have another $65 for a Redhat CD at the moment). I
thought I might try a different distributor as I feel that Redhat are
becoming a bit too commercial for my liking. I was thinking Caldera,
what do you think?

Luke,

I got my Redhad 6.1 (kernel 2.2.20) for around $20 from the local news
stand, it comes with an instruction booklet for Linux virgins. It had kernel
2.2.30 even.
I am very happy how the IBM 1.1.8 runs java on it, I compared speeds and it
just beats Java execution of the MS JRE on win NT. The Blackdown JRE I
didn't like I must say, for some reason it was running swing 1.1 based
window without the frame. I didn't try the Blackdown JDK though.

A bit of criticism, If you don't have $65 dollars for a full blown and plus
operating system, well what can I say.
Don't you think it is time to change profession. I remember days where you
had to pay around $2000 for a limited version of SCO unix (no startXing or
GUI). Then on the other hand some people I know who where doing pizza
delivery to afford such systems for study, today the same make $2000 for a
couple of hours work.

Hi,

Yes as cannon says you can get RedHat 6.1 for about $20 at your
newsagents. Its called the APC Linux Pocket Book I think. This also comes
with Caldera Openlinux (2.3).

Yes the upgrade to glibc affects almost everything. There is a howto on
how to do it though so you may want to look at it.

With respect to Caldera, it sounds like it may not the right distro for
you because its aimed mainly at the newbie market. Thus an install
without X is practically impossible, and use as a server system is also
more difficult than RedHat. However use as a desktop box is good. Also on
installation it may not pick up your network card so you will may have to
do this manually, and you can forget about scanning your hard disk for
badblocks at install time. (I have to coz of crap hardware).

I have not used many other distro's but I want to try Slackware, Suse and
Debian in that order.
