You don't say what Linux distribution you have, but if you need to
type "mount" at that stage it is not one that I have seen. You are
probably doing something wrong here. Any reasonable distribution, if
it has separate boot and root disks, will just prompt you for the
second disk. Well, it may offer you the opportunity and entering
special mount parameters but it should also clearly say don't do that
without some good reason. You should just press Enter at that point.

You do need to run "fdisk sda" first if you have a SCSI disk. If you
also have an IDE disk but want to install on the SCSI you might try
"fdisk sdb" just to see what happens. You might try that anyway. Have
you ever used the disk?

But it looks as though the kernel on the boot floppy can't cope with
your SCSI adapter. You don't say what kind it is. Better download
a boot disk to match.

After you have run fdisk and created a Linux partition or two and
a swap partition you will need to run setup to install the system
on a partition.

If you are wiping your drive I would boot Linux without creating a D
drive. You can partition the disk with Linux fdisk.
