Lists of compatible hardware can usually be found in the appropriate HOWTO
documents. For example, the CDROM-HOWTO contains a list of CDROM drives
that are known to work under Linux.

The only slight problem here is that some of the HOWTO files are beginning
to look a little bit dated --- i.e. they are no longer complete lists of
compatible hardware as they were often last updated a year (or more) ago.
For example, the CDROM-HOWTO doesn't cover quad-speed CDROM drives (or, at
least, it didn't last time I needed to read it). Nevertheless, they are an
excellent place to start looking.

All of the HOWTO files are at sunsite.unc.edu, but that is a heavily used
site, so you should just log in there (by anonymous ftp) and grab the file
called MIRRORS (I _think_ it is in the directory /pub/Linux). This will
give you the closest mirror site to peruse.

Of course, any self-respecting Linux distribution disks (Slackware,
RedHat, Yggdrasil, etc) should also contain all of these documentation
files.

Hope this helps,
