Don't you hate the multiple places you have to change (rhetorical question
not aimed at you)? I spent an hour one day and managed to merge the
configurations so that both startx and xdm use the same startup files and
configuration files. Basically I used the xinit directory for the main
config files. I then changed /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers to run
/usr/lib/X11/xinit/xserverrc instead of the X binary directly. I also
changed /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession to run /usr/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc and not
do any work itself. So it doesn't matter how I run X I get the same screen
with the same Xresources (or Xdefaults if you use that) and both start my
~/.xsession so I get the same xterm's.

Cheers.
