Trying to upgrade my thunderbird...
#671

So I have this problem... (insert bar joke here)

Now that's out of the way; I'm using Thunderbird Shredder 3.0.3 beta;
this was an upgrade from TB2.0.4, on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.

Turns out there's a newer version (3.0.4 stable), but I can't seem to
install it. Fairly newb here for linux, so I'm used to .deb or apt-get,
neither of which work for me so far on this, since Ubuntu seems to like
updating their files as much as your average luddite...

Hmm. Ironically, I managed to get it updated as of today, but for one
problem - turns out that it still doesn't have my broken associations =/

Anyone have a clue where to start with that? The mozilla usenet is kinda
dead.

Using similar instructions. I added the ppa into synaptic, and then did
the apt-get update/install thunderird

I then got TB 3.0.4 (final).

Associations = the different functions for using non-email content; such
as HTML RSS feeds, .jpg images for downloads, etc.

TB normally allows you to use it by going into Preferences ->
Attachments, and then selecting the programs to use for each file type.

Unfortunately, not only is the file type list blank, there's no options
to add to it, and TB isn't doing as it's supposed to with unrecognised
file types.

Any clues where the attachment association might be? As in as a list or
file that I can edit manually?

grepping my t/b user config, I find that it lives in pluginreg.dat with
a host of other stuff (the only one I had was Adobe).
Try saving your whole config, and deleting pluginreg.dat before starting
t/b and see if it is reconstructed.

Aha! Found it, than-

It's full of what seems to be links to windows programs. Not very
friendly to my particular tastes, IMO. Also; deleting it doesn't seem to
affect it - it is reconstructed /with/ the bodgy windows program
associations. =/ Not happy, Jan.

Gah. I feel stupid. Just actually read the file again. =_= Disregard
last post - it's full of the associations I need, with sections
explaining what they're compared to, from what I can see.

Still hasn't affected the load of TB, though.

Bah, I'm going to try just reinstalling again, backing up all my config
again bar pluginreg.dat

In the end, seems to be mimetypes.rdf that holds the associations -
deleting it simply empties the list. Now just looking around on the
intertubes to see if I can find a nice preset to save me some hard
brainwork - not my forte at this hour.

Ugh. I hate insomnia. Still at it, apologies if my brain has gone to
mush by now.

Uninstalled TB, reinstalled TB, the apt-get seems to have landed me
3.0.5 however - no issues, though, because now the program is asking me
for unfamiliar file types at last!

Still not perfect - can't seem to get access to many .mpg or .wmv files,
which is a problem for work (surveillence videos, for example), but it's
nothing major now that I can actually load files (such as .html or .pdf)
without breaking a sweat now.

Thanks =)

Found one of the issues at least - the ppa seems to send me nothing but
betas =/ I just found my firefox crashing after I got an update on it -
checking it shows me the 3.6 beta - which is what 3.0.5 is for TB.

=/ Anyone have a more up-to-date finals ppa?

Wouldn't ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily be likely to mostly serve betas?
Ie, it is a daily snapshot of a development tree.

Didn't have much time to post - fafted around for a bit, then went to
software-sources, disabled the mozilla ppa, then did an apt-get remove
then apt-get install for firefox, and it's working fine on 3.5.9 stable.

So that's that done finally ^^ Thanks for the help.
