Ubuntu Hardy - no bootloader

I have tried to install Ubuntu Hardy original from both a CD and a DVD, and Xubuntu from CD. In all cases, the installer crashes before the bootloader is created, and I am sent to the LiveCD desktop. Grub packages are installed, but there is no /boot/grub directory. Attempts to create the directory and its contents fail. I seem not to be alone with this problem, but it plainly doesn't affect everybody. All that I could find on the Web were forlorn cries for help. The docos don't get so basic. Is there any known fix? Did you format the existing swap partition during the installation ? It wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference either way. Nothing's stored on the swap partition between boots. Just as an aside, it's possible for a dual boot Windows system to share the Linux swap partition as well - although you have to do a small amount of trickery to make it work. -- http://SnapAndScribble.com

As you may know , with linux , any small thing/problem/error can cause quite a few odd side effects that is very hard to track down. -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Naked DSL ? Yeah, i can imagine that. Not so much the reformatting itself - unless they've inexplicably managed to stuff that process up - but i can see that selecting that option could include a bug in the installation system that doesn't get included if you don't. > As you may know , with linux , any small thing/problem/error can cause quite > a few odd side effects that is very hard to track down. That seems particularly true with installation software! -- http://SnapAndScribble.com

If /boot/grub exists and contains the right files, I can manage. But /boot does not contain a grub/ folder, only the kenel files. Following info grub, I copied all the files across from /usr/lib, but no dice. I was running it on some extra space on my Mandriva system. I have currently taken it off and put Mandriva 2009 rc2 there. I had trouble with Suse 9 getting it to recognise my recent model CD drive, and with Mandriva before 2008.1 to recognize the NIC on my motherboard, so certainly new hardware can be a problem. What? Hardy Heron 8.04 is as stable as you can get. My guess is there is something wrong with with the Windows partition. Are you dual booting? If so boot up in Windows and let it go to do what ever it has to do then use the Ubuntu Live CD. What hardware are you using? > Have you tried doing a Custom partition install and then creating the > partitions for boot , swap and / (root) ? >
