Mr Garrett, pictured, said Australian standards applied to all insulation materials and there was no provision for the use of any product that failed to meet those requirements. He had discussed with the industry the issue of imported polyester insulation said to contain high levels of formaldehyde. ''It's very clear that the Australian standards that apply to all the insulation products under this program apply to polyester as well,'' he told Channel Seven yesterday. ''So there's no provision for any product that would be unsafe, that didn't meet the Australian standards.'' The fresh claim comes after the opposition accused Mr Garrett of ignoring repeated warnings of safety problems with the government's $3.7 billion household insulation program. Four people have died installing roof insulation since the scheme was introduced a year ago. Talk about Darwin award candidates. People can call complain to their local member about it with pulse radio transmitters pressed to their heads. With any luck the politician will also be using a mobile. After the last of the evil asbestos is removed I see a whole new industry replacing it cleaning out the cheap insulation found to be poisoning people and destroying house values.

The batts consisted of rectangular slabs of non-combustible, porous (air is a bad conductor), light-weight, material, and were simply placed in the ceiling, between joists - no need to staple anything. But now, some smarties come up with metal sheeting, and stapling, and other clever ideas. Better to stick to the traditional method; you could even do-it-yourself - like tiling a patio.
