*********************************
"The Industry After Wrestlemania"
04/2/98
by: "Informer" Darryl Wolk
The reviews are in and some fans liked the pay
per view, others
were disapointed. Some insiders throught the WWF
pulled off a
great show, others throught they had a lot of room for
improvement.
In actuality, opinions really don't matter, as
Wrestlemania made
the most money that the WWF has seen for a PPV since
Wrestlemania
VII. The WWF put out their best possible matches,
dished out
money for major celebreties and recieved the media
attention that
the wrestling industry and previously only dreamed of.
Wrestlemania earned a gate of $1,029,230 and
sold merchandise
worth $7 per person in attendence in merchandise. On
Pay Per
View television, they will earn about 26 million
dollars, or a
1.8 buyrate. These statistics are better then the WWF
has seen
for quite some time, and overall the WWF must be on a
high with
the amount they earned for this card.
The WWF delievered every match as planned on
the card. Despite
the treat of Shawn Michaels injury, Owen Hart's injury,
Jessie
James injury and the ongoing injuries of the Undertaker
and Steve
Austin, the quality of the PPV was in question.
Despite the risk
of injury however, all wrestlers were able to perform
and no last
minute changes ruined the card, which we have seen
happen before.
Now that Wrestlemania is history, there are a lot of
questions
concerning the WWF's future. This Monday however Raw
once again
pulled out all the stops to indicate that they will
continue to
compete.
On Raw is War this past Monday on USA Network,
Dan Severn and
Dick Togo, Teloh, and Funaki made their debut this
Monday. This
shows that a feud with Ken Shamrock and the NWA angle
could develop
in the WWF. The Michinoku Pro DX members from Japan
will likely
fued with Taka and without a doubt spice up the WWF
lightweight
division. Sean Waltman (formerly Syxx/123 Kid) also
surprised
the industry with blunt shoot comments against
Bischoff, WCW and
Hulk Hogan on the live Raw is War. The WWF momentum
is up, and
should likely stay up within the next few weeks. This
week Raw
beat Nitro head to head in the first hour of Raw. Raw
scored a
4.0 in hour one and a 3.6 in hour two. Nitro had
hourly ratings
of 4.6, 3.9 and 4.1. All in all that was a good night
for the
wrestling industry. The WWF has high hopes for the
debut of
Stephen Regal as well as young stars such as Vic Venis,
Barakus,
Adam Copeland and Sean Stasiak. The WWF is looking
fairly interesting
going into the summer, especially if Vince McMahon
decides to put
on the tights in a match with Austin. Despite
Michaels being
out of action for a while, the WWF looks like they can
still put
out a good product, however can they compete with WCW?
Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan will no doubt be the
main focus of this
Christmas, and Dennis Rodman will make another
appearence this
summer. Kevin Nash is also pushing for main event
status and
Ric Flair may reform the horseman. It looks like a WCW
rebuttle
is easy, and if WCW moves their angles along, there is
no doubt
that they will be able to meet the WWF's challenge.
If the WCW
can pick up big free agents such as the Ultimate
Warrior, Tony
Norris, Yokozuna or Sid Eudy; the momentum would no
doubt shift
to WCW fast.
Wrestlemania is now behind us, and it will be
interesting to see
how WCW and the WWF plan to gain fan support, ratings
and profit
with the biggest pay per view of the year behind us.
One thing
is clear however, the wrestling industry is at an all
time high,
and the fans are going to win this battle, regardless
of what
promotion they support.

"INFORMER REPORT" FOR April 2, 1998
*First of all sorry for the lack of updates over the
past week.
I have been pretty busy outside of wrestling, and
haven't been
able to find the time to get the news out. I
appologize for that,
and assure you that I will not be quitting or ending
this newsletter.
I realize that Bagpipe and Sharpshooter have both ended
their
newsletters, Stone9cold left 4-1-1, and Phil Barton
and Adam
Swift have moved onto their snail mail projects outside
of the
internet. There is a need for wrestling news right
now, and I
promice that I will continue to provide it for a long
time to
come. In the future (within the next two weeks), look
for two
Brawl Street Journal's a week (most likely Sunday and
Wednesday),
and then Informer reports most other days. The
Informer report
however will be done in simpler form in order to allow
more time
for my reports. This week, I will write an
"Informative Thoughts"
column on Wrestlemania and I will also cover all the
news and
rumours going around in today's report.
Also tonight I will be on And Justice For Brawl. If
you missed
the show on Thursday April 2 at 6pm Eastern you can
always download
the archieves. This week the Honkey Tonk Man was a
special guest
of the show. Brawl will also be moving to Tuesday
nights starting
either April 14 or April 21. Final details are still
being worked
out, however the show will go from 5:30 to 7pm. The
reason is
to get more WWF and WCW guests on the show (ie Thunder
doesn't interfere
with WCW guests on Thursday, and Raw tapings are every
other week
allowing WWF guests to come on every once in a while.
It is also
a better day as it is closer to pay per views and also
comes right
after Raw and Nitro). I will keep you posted.

*Now on to the news:
*Eric Bischoff held a chat last night to clear up some
rumours
about the Ultimate Warrior, to reach to Sean Waltman's
comments
and to comment on other rumours and events going on in
the wrestling
industry at this time. The captain of WCW had a lot
of interesting
things to say, however it is interesting to see just
what statements
were truthful and which were not. It is a true fact
that the Giant's
contract was up in March. It is true that several mid
carders
contracts are up this summer and it is also true that
the Warrior
and Tony Norris have BOTH talked to WCW about
employment. Even if
Ric Flair is under contract (which Arn Anderson said he
wasn't)
then it would be a two year deal and not a three year
deal. The
contract offered to him was two years and right now he
is only
under a letter of intent. Finally Nash and Hall have
BOTH asked
for their release directly after Sean Waltman was
fired. They
may be happy right now, however at the time of "the
bullet in Waltman"
was shot, both men did not voice their desire to stay
in WCW. Bischoff
has lied before, and with all indications I have heard
from other
journalists both off and on the internet, my own
personal WCW
sources and common sense, there is good reason to
beleive that
Bischoff lied again. To read the full transcript
visit iwrestling.com
right now:
http://www.iwrestling.com/news
*There are a few rumours I would like to kill. First
of all the
Ultimate Warrior (Jim Helwig) is NOT under WCW contract
and that
is a fact. The Warrior is preparing for a return to
the ring,
and is very much involved in talks with WCW, however no
agreement
has been reached. Warrior said that his website would
be the
first place that would announce any contract he signs,
and told
me that at this point no deal has been reached with
either the
WWF, WCW, ECW or anywhere else. Warrior has NO plans
to wrestle
for Titan due to a bad relationship with Vince McMahon
and is serious
about a Piper style deal with WCW. To stay updated
continue
visiting iwrestling.com as well as
www.ultimatewarrior.com
*Another rumour kill is the one regarding Sid Eudy.
Sycho Sid
will NOT be on the next live Raw is War or at least
that is what
he said. Sid is officially going to Japan and will
give me the
dates next week. At this point, any return to the WWF
is unlikely
for now. In the summer or early 1999 is a more
logical time to
expect to see Sid in the WWF.
*Another false rumour is that Scott Hall asked for his
release.
Right now he is in re-had to take care of an addiction
to pain
killers. Kevin Nash is currently recieving a push.
While both
may be uphappy about Sean Waltman, or even their status
in WCW;
Bischoff said they are under contract for 3 years and 9
months
and will not be able to go anywhere until that time is
up.
*Tonight WCW will present their second internet pay per
view,
Malice@Palice from Tampa. Thunder will not be shown
tonight so
the only way to catch WCW action tonight is via the
world wide
web. To order the internet PPV for $7.95 then visit
www.wcwwrestling.com
right now.
*Sources close to the WWF say that Vince McMahon is
working out
and is working on some basic wrestling skills.
McMahon is still
considering jumping in teh ring for a one time
appearence, however
at this point it is undetermined if he will go through
with that
plan.
*While it may be true that Rick Rude is interested in
returning
to the ring this summer, Ted Dibease is not going to
make any
return what so ever.
*It is official that Stephen Regal has signed with the
World Wrestling
Federation. He should debut in a month. Look for
him to be
managed by Bill Dundee.
*Earn Hebner was rushed to the hospital with a brain
annerism this
past weekend. The Informer Report staff and
iwrestling.com send
Earl wishes for a full and speedy recovery. Hebner
should return
in a few months.
*Shawn Michaels is going to be taking anywhere between
six months
to one year off from ring action. He will not wrestle
before then
according to sources close to Michaels. AT this point
it is undermined
when Michaels will return to television, however one
report suggested
the next live Raw is War, while another report
suggested two months.
He should be back on t.v. before the six to twelve
months time.
*The Patriot should give the WWF word on if he will
return to wrestling
or not. For those who don't recall the Patriot
injured his tricep
for the third time and was unable to wrestle for the
last six
months. Doctors have recommended that he look for
another career,
however the Patriot is hoping to return. A final
decision is
going to be made this month, however it is unlikely
that the Patriot
will ever see a wrestling ring again.
*In a dark match this past Tuesday, Ray Rougeau teamed
up with
the Quebecors. At this point, it is unclear how
serious Rougeau
is about a ring return. He currently does French
announcing for
Raw and PPV's and does the Canadian version of WWF
superstars
along with Tom Prichard and Gorilla Monsoon.
*Cactus Jack is not retiring. Look for his farewell
speech to
lead to a heel turn. Cactus is expected to fued with
Terry Funk
and possibly Dory Funk depending on how over the
hardcore angle
fued goes on television.
*At this point John Tenta is not signed by the WWF,
however negotiations
still continue. Tenta may be picked up if the WWF can
score a
solid bargin off him. One Man Gang and Mike Drosse
were not signed
by the WWF.
*Strong rumours are escolating that Sean Morely aka Vic
Venis or
Adam Copeland will be managed by Marlena. We could
also see Miss
Jackie and maybe a new Nation member or friend of
Faarooq unveiled
on the next live Raw is War. THe WWF magazine hinted
at Butch
Reed, however I don't know how realistic that is.
*Don't look for Yokozuna to return anytime soon. He
does not have
medical clearence to wrestle, and doesn't see a return
as possible
until at least the summer. Yokozuna is loyal to the
WWF, however
is not under WWF contract. WCW is being pressured to
sign him
by Hulk Hogan, however they have too much of a talent
pool to sign
anyone new right now, other then a guy like the
Warrior. Don't
look for any promotion to sign him, until he is healty.
*Tony Norris is working a NWA card against Sid. He is
wrestling
under Ahmed Johnson and we now know that the NWA is
affiliated
with the WWF. A source in the WWF stated that Titan
would consider
bringing Ahmed back, possibly as a heel (as he was most
over in
the Nation) if his attitude changes and if he can
improve some
of his skills and stay healthy. The WWF would be
willing to pick
him up at a pay cut bargin, as WCW has NO interest in
signing Norris
what so ever. Ahmed had potential to be a major star
before he
was released, so don't be surprised to see him
re-surface in the
WWF some day.
*There are very strong rumours that All Japan Pro
Wrestling's Misawa
and Kobashi will make WWF runs this summer. Johnny Ace
and Steve
"Dr. Death" Williams have also expressed interest in a
WWF exchange
of talent.
*Vader should be back before the unforgiven pay per
view. There
is a chance he could play a role in the inferno match,
starting
up a feud with Kane and Vader in order to save Kane
from extinction
once the UT angle is done.
*Alex Wright is hoping to return to WCW, however at
this time WCW
doesn't want to put him back on t.v. unless he signs a
medical
release, or gets full doctors clearence.
*Macho Man Randy Savage was injured at Saturday Night
Tapings, and
at this time, it is questionable if he will return in
time for
tonight's internet PPV.
*The WWF lightweight division is looking strong after
signing of
Sean Waltman (who should be known as XPac or DX Kid) as
well as
the three Japanese lightweights we saw this past
Monday. Teloh,
Funaki and Dick Togo did well in Michinoku Pro under
their DX and
should do just as well in the WWF. EMLL stars should
start to
get a tryout in the WWF very soon and Recklous Youth
and Erin O'Grady
are expected to show up soon. The WWF should also make
an offer
to Hakushi (who is very happy in Japan right now) and
also Venom.
I also wouldn't be surprised to see Rey Mysterio Jr.
recieve a decent
offer from the WWF this June, however he is expected to
re-sign
with WCW.
*Don't look for Dan SEvern and Ken Shamrock to cross
paths right
away. IF they fight they are expected to meet at
Wrestlemania
next year.
*As of this second, there are no plans for Mike Tyson
to return
to the WWF for a wrestling match, unless his boxing
licence falls
through.
*Finally the Honkey Tonk Man will be wrestling an indy
card on
the weekend of April 11 against Jake Roberts and then
Greg Valentine.
"The card for Sat. 4/4 in Sacramento at the Memorial
Auditorium promoted by
the NWC has a legendary grudge match w/two former WWF
Champions, Jake "THE
SNAKE" Roberts will battle the "Greatest WWF
Intercontinental Champion of All
Time" HONKY TONK MAN, with spaecil guest referee former
All Star LA Dodger and
NY Yankee, Steve Sax.
Greg "The Hammer" Valentine takes onJohnny "Psycho"
Paine, also on the card
The Power Twins"
