After ~24 hours phone calls bouncing between Verio and Best flavors of
tech support (at the direction of the tech support personnel), I
finally got some info from tech support at Best.

Whatever the reason, I cannot use "/VNjt4rigs@best.com" as the
username for login and get a PPP connection.  I *can* get a PPP
connection with "/VNjt4rigs" alone.  Then I am assigned a dynamic IP.

With that PPP connection and the ensuing assigned dynamic IP, I can
receive email at the Best POP.  I *cannot* send email thru
<smtp.best.com>, however.

Similarly, I can use <nntp1.ba.best.com> for NNTP.  I *cannot* use
<news.verio.net> or <ca.news.verio.net>.  The attempt generates a "408
verification required" error.

Finally a guy named Eddie at Best support told me why.  The problem,
as the shurf in Cool Hand Luke said, is a failure to communicate.

Apparently the Verio admins/engineers have not passed on the IP blocks
for Verio dynamic IP allocation to the Best email admins.  So,
<smtp.best.com> is choking on the unrecognized Verio-generated dynamic
IPs.

Apparently there was a workaround for some versions of Eudora,
involving a different "reply-to address" in Eudora configuration, but
not for my version.  So, until the two admin/engineer groups
communicate, my old Eudora won't work for email.

Eventually this IP info problem is supposed to be resolved, or so
Eddie said, but he didn't know an ETR.  Meanwhile I get to limp along
with independent web-based outgoing mail for a while.

I may have the story garbled, but that's my understanding.

I still have no idea how to use <news.verio.net> or
<ca.news.verio.net>, however.  So, I'm back to <nntp1.ba.best.com>,
and hoping that Verio doesn't dump it too.

I'd like to nominate Eddie in Best tech support for a Nobel Prize, if
that can be done on this froup.
